Following the conclusion of the preseason slate, the San Francisco 49ers made the necessary moves to arrive at their initial 53-man roster by the NFL's August 26, 1:00 p.m. PT deadline. In addition to the players named to the 53-man roster, the team will add another 17 practice squad members in the coming days. Beginning in 2024, the league has expanded the practice squads of every team to 17 if one player is a qualifying international player.
Here is a position-by-position breakdown of the 49ers roster as of Tuesday afternoon:
Quarterbacks (2)
San Francisco enters the year with two quarterbacks on the active roster. Purdy, a seventh-round pick in 2022, has signed a five-year extension, solidifying his place as the franchise quarterback after throwing for nearly 10,000 yards and 64 touchdowns in 36 starts. Behind him, the 49ers signed Jones to a two-year deal this offseason, a former first-round pick who has 52 career starts and a Pro Bowl selection on his resume. Rookie Kurtis Rourke will remain on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list while rehabbing a knee injury.
Running Backs/Fullback (5)
McCaffrey enters 2025 fully healthy and poised for another dominant campaign after a strong training camp. The 49ers traded for Robinson Jr. from the Washington Commanders, and he's coming off a career-high eight rushing touchdowns. Robinson shared his focus is on complementing McCaffrey, aiming to form "the best duo in the league." Second-year back Guerendo adds depth after flashing his strengths as a rookie, while fifth-round pick James makes the roster as he works back from a pinkie injury. Veteran fullback Juszczyk, re-signed in March to a two-year extension, remains a cornerstone of the ground game after earning his ninth straight Pro Bowl and another AP All-Pro nod in 2024.
Wide Receivers (5)
The 49ers receiving corps begins the season without Brandon Aiyuk (Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list, knee) and while Demarcus Robinson remains unavailable (Reserve/Suspended list). Pearsall, the second-year wideout, is poised to take on a leadership role after flashing reliable hands in his rookie season. Watkins, a fourth-round pick out of Ole Miss, earned his spot with strong preseason reps and adds versatility in the slot. San Francisco also added Moore in an August trade with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Tight Ends (3)
Kittle remains the cornerstone of San Francisco's tight end room, coming off his sixth Pro Bowl season. The veteran is joined by Farrell, a free agent addition signed for his blocking ability, and Tonges, who joined the 49ers practice squad in 2023.
Offensive Line (10)
Eleven-time Pro Bowler Williams continues to anchor the 49ers offensive line, with veteran center Brendel returning in the middle. At guard, second-year Puni and sixth-year pro Bartch provide stability, while right tackle McKivitz enters his sixth season in San Francisco looking to build on a strong 2024 season. Hennessy, now in his fifth NFL season after joining the team last year, provides depth on the team's O-line. Rookie linemen Colby, a seventh-rounder in 2025, and Moss, an undrafted free agent, emerged as some of camp's biggest risers and make the initial 53-man squad. Veterans Burford and Pleasants round out the group, giving the 49ers flexibility across multiple spots up front.
Defensive Line (11)
Bosa, the five-time Pro Bowler, once again headlines the 49ers defensive front. Free-agent addition Huff strengthens the pass rush, while first-round pick Williams and fellow rookies Collins and West add youthful depth. With Kevin Givens sidelined on Injured Reserve, linemen Gross-Matos, Anderson, Okuayinonu, Davis, Beal Jr., and Elliot round out the D-line room.
Linebackers (5)
All-Pro Warner once again sets the tone for the defense. Behind him, Winters, Bethune and rookie LB Martin impressed throughout camp with their playmaking ability and steady growth. Special teams ace, Gifford, rounds out the unit, earning his spot thanks to his reliability in multiple phases of the game.
Cornerbacks/Defensive Back (6)
Lenoir enters the year as the 49ers top defensive back, with second-year corner Green lining up opposite him. Rookie CB Stout is expected back from a preseason calf injury, while Luter Jr. and Lucas secured roster spots with strong preseason showings that add depth to the secondary. Neal, a free-agent addition who last played with the Miami Dolphins, adds versatility to the room. Jakob Robinson and Tre Brown open the season on the Injured Reserve list.
Safeties (4)
The safety group blends youth and experience, featuring third-year Brown, veteran Pinnock, who joins San Francisco after four seasons with the Jets and Giants, and rookie safety Sigle, who impressed with a strong preseason. Malik Mustapha will begin the year on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list as he continues his recovery from a knee injury.
Specialists (2)
- K Jake Moody
- LS Jon Weeks
Moody returns for his third season as San Francisco's kicker. Long snapper Weeks, a Pro Bowler, continues his reliable play in his 16th NFL season.
