Days 6 & 7 of 49ers Training Camp: Roster Moves, Deep Ball Highlights, and LB Standouts

The San Francisco 49ers returned to the field on Thursday following a scheduled off-day, resuming their second week of training camp with Day 7 of open practices. The break came after a competitive Tuesday session (Day 6) and was a part of a busy 72 hours filled with roster moves, injury updates, and continued evaluation across key position battles.

On Tuesday, the team signed defensive lineman Jaylon Allen to a one-year deal. To make room on the roster, the 49ers placed DL Tarron Jackson on the Injured Reserve list. Thursday brought additional transactions, including the signings of RB Ameer Abdullah, QB Carter Bradley, WR Marquez Callaway and WR Andy Isabella. The team released WR Equanimeous St. Brown and waived OL Sebastian Gutierrez, WR Malik Knowles and S Jaylen Mahoney.

Key Takeaways from Days 6 & 7

Injury Updates:

  • OL Ben Bartch (quad) was activated off the Active/Non-Football Injury List on Thursday and participated in Day 7 of practice.
  • DL Mykel Williams returned Thursday after missing Tuesday's session with a minor ankle injury.
  • DB Deommodore Lenoir (hip) missed Tuesday and Thursdays practices, but is expected back in a few days, per head coach Kyle Shanahan.
  • Also sidelined Thursday: CB Renardo Green (hamstring), WR Jacob Cowing (hamstring), WR Jauan Jennings (calf), and RB Jordan James (knee).

Day 6:

Offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak addressed the media on Tuesday, touching on key storylines from the first two weeks of camp:

  • On the wide receiver competition:
"It's definitely too early to tell who's going to be ready for Week 1," Kubiak said. "We probably have more competition at that position group than we've had in the past couple years... It's given a lot of guys opportunities to show what they're made of. Guys we haven't seen a lot of. But as far as saying who's ready for Week 1, who's going to be out there, it's definitely too early to tell. We got to keep stacking days."
  • On WR Brandon Aiyuk's status:
"He's out there every day. He's with those guys. He's very much a part of the position group, meaning he is not just isolated doing his rehab and then being around the building. He's in the individual drills with them, he's on the field. When we are in meetings, he's engaged. When we're at walkthroughs, he's with those guys. He's helping (wide receivers/passing game specialist Leonard Hankerson) Hank kind of coach on the side. I'm really happy with BA right now with where he is at. Obviously, he is doing his rehab, and he's doing what he has to do to be ready to go."
  • On the tight end room:
"Obviously TE George Kittle has had a good camp so far and real happy with where he's at. And then we brought Luke Farrell in during the offseason and Luke's been doing a good job. Luke's a big physical guy who's going to do a lot for us in the run game and pass protection. Luke's shown us what he can do in the pass game too. He's done a good job so far in camp. And then everyone kind of behind them, we're talking about Brayden Willis, Jake Tonges, and then Ross Dwelley, there's a good competition there for those last couple spots. Those guys are doing a good job. They're very consistent. They show up every day, they're on it, and those guys are going to push each other all throughout camp. So, we're just kind of tracking that as we go through it."

Day 7:

  • QB Brock Purdy turned in one of his best practices of camp on Thursday, highlighted by three deep completions.
  • Head coach Kyle Shanahan weighed in on Purdy's growth as a deep passer:
"I think Brock's always had it. It's just about recognizing when it's the right look, being able to get your body into it and anticipate it and see it," Shanahan said. "Deep balls, I think, can be a tough thing when you don't anticipate it, when you don't see it right. I think the more Brock gets used to coverages, the more when to take those shots and when not to is something that's to me where he's improved."
  • Purdy's top throws on Thursday included:
    • A strike to WR Demarcus Robinson for a big gain downfield.
    • A well-placed deep ball to rookie WR Jordan Watkins.
    • A perfectly thrown sideline shot to WR Ricky Pearsall, who returned to practice after missing the previous two sessions. The ball floated just over a defender and dropped into Pearsall's arms in stride.
  • After practice, Pearsall reflected on his mindset and building chemistry with Purdy:
"My mindset is I'm on this grass right now, I get to wear this logo, I get to breathe, I'm excited for all those things," Pearsall said. "If I continue to work my butt off, continue to run full-speed routes, continue to get with Brock and expand on the playbook, the ball's going to start coming my way naturally. So, it's about what I do with it, the opportunities that come."
  • With veterans RB Christian McCaffrey, T Trent Williams, DL Nick Bosa, and FB Kyle Juszczyk getting a rest day, Thursday was a prime opportunity to evaluate the linebacker group:
    • Rookie Stone Blanton and third-year Dee Winters are developing a rhythm alongside All-Pro Fred Warner, often seen communicating and reacting quickly during team drills.
    • Third-round pick Nick Martin flashed during team drills, staying around the football, forcing a fumble, and showcasing a level of physicality that stood out among the defense.
