The San Francisco 49ers returned to the practice field Monday for their 13th training camp session, their first workout since the preseason opener against the Denver Broncos. San Francisco's offense opened that game with an impressive scoring drive, but the Broncos ultimately pulled away in the second half to secure a 30-9 win.
Ahead of practice, head coach Kyle Shanahan provided a wide receiver room update, announcing that Jordan Watkins will miss about a month with a high ankle sprain, Jacob Cowing is expected back this week, and Brandon Aiyuk could return by Week 6. Demarcus Robinson remains in the appeals process for his potential suspension. "The (WR) room is a lot more open than it's been before," Shanahan said after today's practice.
Key Takeaways from Day 13
Roster Moves:
- On Monday morning, the 49ers signed DL Trevis Gipson and RB Jeff Wilson Jr. to one-year deals. The team placed RB Ameer Abdullah on the Injured Reserve list, waived QB Tanner Mordecai, and activated OL Andre Dillard off the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list.
Practice Notes:
- Players not participating today: CB Renardo Green, CB Upton Stout, CB Tre Brown, S Richie Grant, CB Fabian Moreau, DL Robert Beal Jr., DL Kevin Givens, DL Jordan Elliott, DL Sam Okuayinonu, DL Mykel Williams, WR Jauan Jennings, WR Jordan Watkins, WR Jacob Cowing, RB Jordan James, RB Isaac Guerendo.
- Players who returned to practice today: DL Evan Anderson, S Ji'Ayir Brown, OL Andre Dillard, LB Chazz Surratt.
- In his return to The Bay, Wilson Jr. participated in his first practice since rejoining the team. The veteran running back previously spent 2.5 seasons with the Miami Dolphins but noted his familiarity with Kyle Shanahan's offense should lead to a smooth transition.
- "As soon as the news started circulating about me coming here, I had so many fans DMing me and texting me, 'Man, we miss you. We love you,'" Wilson Jr. said following his first practice back with the 49ers. "There's people that still carry love, and that was the main reason why it made it sweeter to come back, because having those people reach out, it's like, 'Man, we miss you. We love you. Thank you.' All those things go a long way. You never know what a person's going through. To hear those things at the right time, it could be a big difference."
- "Awesome player, awesome person, and pumped him back in here," Shanahan added.
- Another new addition to the squad, Gipson saw immediate action with the first-team defense. The D-lineman deflected a red zone pass that DL Nick Bosa intercepted.
- Speaking of the "Smaller Bear," Bosa applied consistent pressure during team drills. S Jason Pinnock and CB Chase Lucas each recorded pass breakups. Safety Marques Sigle continued working with the top defensive group after a strong preseason opener.
- "I thought he (Sigle) had a really good game," Shanahan said. "On special teams and on defense, so I wouldn't rule him out for that (starting spot at safety)."
- On the offense, RB Christian McCaffrey found running lanes multiple times, showing burst and speed before being tracked down by LB Fred Warner. WR Robbie Chosen made a diving touchdown grab from QB Mac Jones in the red zone despite tight coverage from S Jaylen Mahoney. Jones also connected with WR Ricky Pearsall for a wide-open touchdown. QB Brock Purdy connected with WR Demarcus Robinson and hauled in a contested catch with LB Dee Winters in tight coverage.
