Morning Report: Shanahan, Griese on Purdy's QB Progress 🗞️

Good Morning Faithful,

Here are your top 49ers storylines for Friday, May 24th.

New and Notable

Shanahan and Griese Talk QB Development Headed into Year 3 with Purdy

This offseason marks an important career first for Brock Purdy, who has put together a remarkable first two seasons in the NFL. Believe it or not, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback hasn't had the opportunity to enjoy a healthy offseason as QB1 until this year.

Headed into his rookie season, Purdy sat behind Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo on the depth chart, and following the 2022 season, he was rehabbing from a season-ending elbow surgery. In spite of those things, the now third-year QB was able to continue his upward trajectory throughout the 2023 campaign, so much so, that he led San Francisco to a Super Bowl LVIII appearance in his first full year as a starter.

Brandon Staley Talks Assistant Head Coach/Defense Role, Signing on with 49ers

Hires and title changes within the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff were officially released this week, coinciding with the team's start of organized team activities. One of the more notable additions of this offseason includes former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley who has joined the 49ers as assistant head coach/defense. Staley brings a wealth of NFL coaching experience with him to The Bay after a three-year stint with the Chargers, a year as defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Rams and another three seasons as part of Vic Fangio's defensive staff split between the Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears.

5 Things to Know: Tatum Bethune

In the seventh round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected Tatum Bethune from Florida State University with the 251st-overall pick.

"It's the best feeling of my life," Bethune said after being drafted. "This feeling doesn't feel real, but I'm ready to get to work."

49ers Announce Coaching Staff Moves Ahead of 2024 Season
