Day 4 of 49ers Training Camp: 'Back Together Weekend,' Injury News, and Rookie Highlights

The San Francisco 49ers took the field Sunday for "Back Together Weekend," the NFL's league-wide celebration marking the return of all 32 teams. Tight end George Kittle joined NFL Network's Sherree Burruss during practice to talk about the team's focused push to remain a top contender this season. Adding to the family atmosphere, head coach Kyle Shanahan's father, Mike Shanahan, was on the sidelines watching practice. The two-time Super Bowl–winning coach has been a regular presence at camp since Kyle took over in 2017.

Before the action got underway, president of football operations and general manager John Lynch addressed the Faithful in attendance, rallying their support for the season ahead.

"We need some energy," Lynch told the crowd. "It's training camp, and believe me, I did them as a player for 15 years… Believe me, you feel and rely on the energy of your fans. I know there are no better fans than the Faithful. So bring it today, and bring it throughout the season."

Key Takeaways from Day 4

  • Injury Updates:
    • Practice was briefly paused after DL Tarron Jackson suffered a neck injury during team drills. Jackson was carted off the field and taken to Stanford Hospital for further evaluation. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Jackson was conscious, moving his extremities, and communicating with teammates afterward, all encouraging signs given the situation. "Always scary when someone gets taken off on a stretcher," Shanahan said. "Hopefully, we cleared the real scary stuff, and hopefully we'll get some good news on his neck."
    • WR Jauan Jennings left midway through practice with a calf injury. Shanahan indicated it could be similar to what Jennings dealt with in the spring, though no timetable for return was provided.
    • WR Jacob Cowing and CB Renardo Green remained out with hamstring injuries but are expected back ahead of the Aug. 16 preseason matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.
    • On a positive note, WR Ricky Pearsall came off the PUP list and returned to practice. He caught a few passes from Brock Purdy, including a touchdown during red-zone drills, and rotated in as a punt returner alongside rookies Junior Bergen and Jordan Watkins.
  • Running back Christian McCaffrey, left tackle Trent Williams, and defensive lineman Nick Bosa had scheduled rest days as part of the team's workload management plan.
  • After missing Friday for personal reasons, Purdy returned to action and had a solid day under center.
  • The running backs made their mark as pass catchers. Second-year back Isaac Guerendo caught a touchdown from Mac Jones, while undrafted rookie Corey Kiner showcased his speed with a deep-ball grab from Tanner Mordecai, turning on the jets to finish the play.
  • The defense had a few highlight-worthy pass breakups today, including undrafted rookie cornerback Jakob Robinson knocking away a pass intended for Pearsall in the corner of the end zone during red-zone drills. Newcomer CB Dallis Flowers, a free-agent addition signed in May, also recorded an impressive breakup during team drills.
  • The kicking competition remained close as both specialists focused on replicating game-speed conditions. The kickers practiced running onto the field quickly from the sidelines for fast attempts, simulating tight game situations and adding pressure during practice. Jake Moody connected from approximately 25, 30, and 40 yards but missed a longer attempt from about 55 yards. Greg Joseph was successful on all four of his tries.

What's Next

The team will put on pads for the first time this training camp tomorrow, on Monday. The first padded practice is a highly anticipated milestone as the 49ers ramp up preparations for the 2025 season.
