49ers Shine in 'Monday Night Football'; 5 Takeaways from #CARvsSF

The San Francisco 49ers defended their home field in primetime, earning a 20-9 win over the Carolina Panthers. San Francisco controlled the flow of the game from the opening drive and secured all three phases to close out their third win in the last four weeks. Here are five takeaways from the Week 12 win:

McCaffrey's First Meeting Against Former Team

Facing the Panthers for the first time since being traded in 2022, RB Christian McCaffrey delivered a statement performance. The All-Pro running back powered San Francisco's offense on the ground, finishing with 89 rushing yards, and a touchdown. His third-quarter scoring drive helped put the 49ers ahead for good, punching in a 12-yard touchdown. McCaffrey is one of just three players in NFL history to record 1,000 rushing and 1,000 receiving yards in a single season, joining Marshall Faulk (1999) and Roger Craig (1985) after accomplishing the feat in 2019. With 796 rushing yards and 785 receiving yards following Week 12, he's on pace to potentially do it again this season.

Kittle Leads the Passing Attack

QB Brock Purdy leaned on his veteran tight end throughout the night, and "The People's Tight End" responded. TE George Kittle caught in six receptions for a team-high 78 yards, averaging more than 13 yards per catch.

Jennings Finds the End Zone

WR Jauan Jennings was the playmaker in two of the game's biggest moments. He set the tone early and opened the game with a 12-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter. Later in the third quarter, Jennings flexed his "third-and-Jauan" nickname and converted a key third-down catch that positioned the offense inside the red zone and set up McCaffrey's touchdown. Jennings finished the night with 41 yards on five catches.

Brown Picks the Ball Twice

S Ji'Ayir Brown delivered his best performance of the season, recording two interceptions and five tackles to eliminate momentum for Carolina on multiple drives. His first pick came in the end zone, preventing an early Panthers scoring opportunity. DL Clelin Ferrell added a fourth-quarter sack for an eight-yard loss that helped stall a late comeback attempt, and DL Bryce Huff continued to generate pressure with two quarterback hits. The 49ers defense allowed just nine points on the night.

Special Teams Swing Momentum

Special teams played a critical role in the win, contributing to both field position and scoring opportunities. Skyy Moore had another big run in Week 12 with a 43-yard kickoff return in the second quarter, setting up a drive that ended in a field goal. Matt Gay stepped into the 49ers kicker position smoothly after joining the team on Wednesday. He stayed steady with a 47-yard field goal before halftime and another from 29 yards in the fourth quarter. Carolina's missed 57-yard attempt late in the contest helped San Francisco maintain its 11-point lead.

Next up, the 49ers go back on the road to face the Cleveland Browns at Huntington Bank Field in Week 13.
