The San Francisco 49ers traveled to Henderson, Nevada, for a Thursday joint practice with the Las Vegas Raiders, braving triple-digit temperatures in an early-morning session designed to beat the heat. Head coach Kyle Shanahan praised the group's effort despite a list of absences across the roster.
"I was happy with the guys," Shanahan shared after practice. "I'm excited to see the film. It was a huge challenge today... I thought we needed it and I was real proud of the guys. A number of positions had to step up, especially DB, D-line, wide out. I thought we competed hard out there, I thought we did a good job and excited to have the tape for these guys.
"It's more about us continuing to get our guys the best they can be. It helps to go against some different techniques and styles to do that, so that's why I like this."
Key Takeaways from Day 15
Roster Moves:
- The 49ers signed DL William Bradley-King and DL Demone Harris to one-year deals.
- In corresponding moves, OL Andre Dillard was placed on the Injured Reserve list and DL Michael Dwumfour was waived.
Injury Updates:
- DL Nick Bosa (neck soreness, hopeful to return next week), CB Tre Brown (heel), S Jason Pinnock (heel), OL Ben Bartch (elbow, out this week) and DL C.J. West (hyperextended knee, no ACL damage) were all sidelined.
Practice Notes:
- Temperatures reached triple digits despite an early start. The 49ers prepared by studying old Seahawks film, noting similarities between Pete Carroll's past defenses and what the Raiders now run under their head coach.
- "Going into playing them I didn't realize their defense would be completely different than it's been in years past," TE George Kittle said. "It seems like the footage that we were watching was like 2015 Seahawks tape. And then if you watch that compared to the game they just played, Seahawks versus the Raiders, I was like, 'Oh, it's the exact same defense.' It was kind of funny to go back and watch tape from before I was actually in the NFL."
- The offense delivered on several explosive plays:
- QB Brock Purdy spotted WR Ricky Pearsall for a deep touchdown early in practice, found TE Brayden Willis on a deep route, and hit FB Kyle Juszczyk in stride through traffic for another long score.
- Purdy also delivered a red zone touchdown to rookie WR Junior Bergen with solid protection from OL Colton McKivitz against Raiders DE Maxx Crosby.
- RB Christian McCaffrey showed burst in the run game and was active as a downfield receiving threat.
- With Ben Bartch sidelined, rookie OL Connor Colby and OL Nick Zakelj rotated first-team reps. Colby posted the team's highest run-blocking grade (73.3) and allowed zero pressures in the preseason opener.
- "I think he's getting better each week," Shanahan said of Colby. "When you get these guys in at first, you try not to judge them too hard because it takes a while. But the cool thing about O-linemen is they just gradually get better each day, they learn what we're asking. It's always different techniques, you never have a guy come out of college who is going to have to run as much as we ask him to as O-line. So, that always takes a number of days, sometimes a number of years. But I think he's improved a lot here in these last couple weeks."
- On defense, LB Dee Winters delivered several big hits during team drills. CB Derrick Canteen broke up a pass intended for Raiders TE Carter Runyon, CB Darrell Luter Jr. provided tight coverage on WR Marquez Callaway, and DB Deommodore Lenoir and S Ji'Ayir Brown combined to break up a deep pass to Raiders WR Tre Tucker. In one-on-ones, CB Siran Neal batted down another throw to Runyon.
- "It's a great opportunity for a lot of these guys who are newer or young to come in and and show what you got," LB Fred Warner said following practice. "I've got to set the tone for the entire defense and the team. So, it's great to for those guys to get those opportunities."
