The San Francisco 49ers bounced back under the primetime lights of "Thursday Night Football," defeating the Los Angeles Rams 26-23 in overtime at SoFi Stadium. With the victory, the 49ers improve to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 against NFC West opponents.
Here are five takeaways from the 49ers-Rams game:
Mac Jones Delivers in Primetime
Jones led multiple long scoring drives and spread the ball around to several pass-catchers in his first primetime start with the 49ers. Jones opened the game with a touchdown strike to TE Jake Tonges, later found RB Christian McCaffrey on a short touchdown, and connected with WR Kendrick Bourne and WR Demarcus Robinson for explosive gains. Despite an injury scare in the third quarter, Jones returned and helped guide the 49ers through overtime with poise.
McCaffrey Powers the Offense
From the opening series, McCaffrey set the tone. Whether running over defenders between the tackles or making plays in the passing game, the dual-threat RB was everywhere. He finished the night with a touchdown through the air, 57 yards on the ground, and key receptions in the overtime drive that sealed the win. His versatility continues to keep the 49ers offense alive.
Defense Comes Up Strong
San Francisco's defense made momentum-shifting plays throughout the night. DL Bryce Huff's first-quarter sack fired up the Faithful in the SoFi crowd, and LB Fred Warner helped slow down LA's run game. One of the biggest moments came in the second quarter when DL Trevis Gipson, elevated from the practice squad just hours earlier, recovered a fumble to stop a Rams drive. Late in the fourth quarter, rookie lineman Alfred Collins stripped the ball from Rams RB Kyren Williams, creating a game-changing turnover. In overtime, the defense came up with the game-winning stop, stuffing Williams on fourth-and-one at the 11-yard line to seal the victory.
Eddy "Dinero" is Money
Kicker Eddy Piñeiro was tested under the brightest lights and was clutch when it mattered most. He hit four field goals on the night, including a career-long 59-yarder late in the fourth quarter and the game-winner from 41 yards in overtime. Piñeiro has quickly established himself as a steady presence in close games.
A Star is Bourne
Wide receiver Kendrick Bourne delivered a career performance, hauling in 10 receptions for 142 yards to lead all 49ers pass-catchers. He consistently came up with contested catches and worked the middle of the field as Jones' go-to target, setting the tone for San Francisco's passing attack.
The 49ers now stand at 4-1 and will enjoy the weekend off before traveling to Tampa Bay to play the Buccaneers in Week 6.
