The San Francisco 49ers opened the 2025 regular season with a 17-13 victory over the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field. Behind a 95-yard scoring drive to start the game and a fourth-quarter touchdown from Brock Purdy to Jake Tonges, the 49ers battled through to secure the win. Rookie safety Marques Sigle made his first NFL start, while Nick Bosa sealed the game with a late sack and fumble recovery.
Here are five takeaways from the 49ers-Seahawks game:
Offense Starts Hot with 95-Yard Drive
The 49ers wasted no time setting the tone on their first possession of 2025. Purdy led a 14-play, 95-yard drive that was capped by a 5-yard touchdown pass to George Kittle. Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall made an immediate impact, hauling in back-to-back catches of 26 and 13 yards to push San Francisco into Seahawks territory. A roughing the passer penalty extended the drive, and Kittle's score put the 49ers ahead 7-0.
Defense Stays Resilient vs. Seattle
Seattle's lone touchdown drive came midway through the second quarter, but San Francisco's defense made them earn it. Fred Warner and Dee Winters combined for a key stop on Zach Charbonnet behind the line of scrimmage, while Nick Bosa and Kalia Davis added tackles for loss to stall the run game. The 49ers defense held firm, limiting explosive plays and forcing Seattle into multiple punts.
McCaffrey Leads Balanced Ground Attack
Christian McCaffrey looked sharp in the opener, contributing both on the ground and through the air to keep the offense moving. The All-Pro back carried the ball 22 times for 69 yards and added 73 receiving yards to spark San Francisco's passing game. Behind him, running back Brian Robinson Jr. added 33 yards on the ground, helping the 49ers reach 384 total net yards. McCaffrey's versatility set the tone throughout the game.
Rookie Marques Sigle Makes Key Play
Making his first career start, the rookie safety came up big in the fourth quarter. With Seattle approaching 49ers territory, Sigle jumped on a fumble forced by Sam Okuayinonu, giving the ball back to San Francisco. Purdy quickly capitalized, hitting Pearsall for 24 yards and later finding McCaffrey on fourth down to set up Jake Moody's game-tying field goal. Sigle finished the night with a total of six key tackles and a takeaway in his NFL debut.
Purdy, Tonges, and Bosa Close the Game
With the 49ers trailing 13-10 late, Purdy took the offense on an explosive drive. He found Pearsall for a 24-yard gain and then connected with tight end Jake Tonges for his third-ever NFL reception and a four-yard touchdown that gave San Francisco a 17-13 lead with under two minutes remaining. On Seattle's final possession, Bosa sealed the game, sacking Sam Darnold for a 7-yard loss and forcing a fumble he recovered himself.
The 49ers open the regular season with a 17-13 win over the Seahawks and will now turn their attention to Week 2 on the road against the New Orleans Saints. The team will return to Levi's® Stadium in Week 3, facing the Arizona Cardinals on September 21.
