Awards season continues for the San Francisco 49ers, and All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey has earned another prestigious honor from the Pro Football Writers of America. McCaffrey was selected as the PFWAâs 2025 NFL Comeback Player of the Year after returning to elite form after a shortened 2024 campaign.
After missing 13 games during the 2024 season due to multiple injuries, McCaffrey rebounded in a major way in 2025, starting all 17 games for San Francisco. He rushed 311 times for 1,202 yards and 10 touchdowns while also leading the NFL in receiving yards by a running back. McCaffrey caught a team-leading 102 receptions for 924 yards and seven receiving touchdowns, finishing the season with 2,126 yards from scrimmage, the second-most in the league.
McCaffrey's impact was felt across the board, as he led the NFL with 119 total first downs gained and recorded four 100-yard rushing performances. He scored either a rushing or receiving touchdown in 12 games and became the first player in NFL history to record at least five rushing touchdowns and five receiving touchdowns in the same season. His standout performance earned him selections to the PFWAâs All-NFL and All-NFC teams.
McCaffrey is the third 49ers player to receive the PFWA's Comeback Player of the Year award since it was created in 1992, joining Hall of Fame defensive lineman Bryant Young (1999) and legendary running back Garrison Hearst (2001).
