Head coach Kyle Shanahan met with reporters on Friday following the San Francisco 49ers dramatic overtime win against the Los Angeles Rams. The 49ers now stand at 4-1 after the hard-fought road victory. Shanahan provided injury updates, praised the growth of young players, and reflected on what made this game so memorable.
Injury Updates
The 49ers came out of Sunday's matchup with a few new injuries on the defensive side:
- CB Upton Stout (ankle) not a high ankle sprain, will be evaluated this week.
- DL Kalia Davis (broken hand) undergoing surgery on Friday; could return with a cast, similar to DL C.J. West.
- DL Yetur Gross-Matos (hamstring) expected to miss some time.
- DL Alfred Collins (knee sprain) status to be determined this week.
On longer-term injuries, Shanahan shared that S Malik Mustapha is the closest to returning and could have his practice window open as soon as Monday. TE George Kittle is "doing good," but more likely to return the following week. WR Brandon Aiyuk remains out for now.
Young Players Delivering
With so many rookies playing extended snaps this season, Shanahan credited the group for stepping up and proving they belong. On Sunday, several young players had game-changing moments. Late in the fourth quarter, Collins stripped the ball from Rams RB Kyren Williams, creating a critical turnover. Safety Marques Sigle also helped seal the win with a stop on the game's final play in overtime. Shanahan noted that while the team knew they'd need rookie contributions this year, those players have earned their spots with preparation and toughness.
"The fact that they're out there and they've worked to stay in this position, they've worked to be healthy. Even though you know you have to play the rookies, if they're not ready, you're still going to play someone behind them. You're still going to put someone ahead of them. They do need to earn that spot. And they did. That's kind of allowed them just to be out there and get this experience and go through all this stuff because when you're made of the right stuff as a football player, the more you play, the better you get. So, for those guys to be in this situation, to be able to stay healthy, to be able to work through all these ups and downs is very beneficial to them and it'll be beneficial to our team as a year goes and into the future."
QB Mac Jones, "Unbelievably Tough"
Jones battled through cramps and fatigue late in the game, even surprising Shanahan by running back into the huddle when coaches were preparing backup Adrian Martinez to take over.
Between eating bananas, drinking pickle juice, and pushing through discomfort, Jones found a way to finish the game. Shanahan found his toughness impressive and said it was a major factor in the team's overtime win.
"Just watching him hang in there, watching him battle, just how he's been through these last two weeks, trying to come back from his knee injury and having to work through that. He's been unbelievably tough. It was crazy when he was starting to cramp at the end of the game. His arm just out of nowhere cramping and having to eat those bananas and everything to get back in there. I was told that he was cramping too hard and Adrian was going in, so we were calling the play for Adrian and then I looked up and Mac was in the huddle, so he just sprinted out there and kept it going. And I was like, 'alright, we'll see how long this lasts.' And he lasted the whole game and obviously it was a big part of why we won."
A Win to Remember
Shanahan described Sunday's matchup as "unusually exhausting" but one that will stand out. From the physical battles at the line of scrimmage to clutch plays in the fourth quarter and overtime, the win over the Rams required every ounce of resilience.
"Just the competitive stamina that you needed for that game. As a player, a coach, a fan, everyone. I mean, just 84 plays or whatever it was and every one seemed like it mattered. Struggling to run the ball, but still knowing that you needed to try to control that D-Line a little bit. All the things that went into it, just the injuries and stuff and overcoming so many things, and guys making those plays at the end which were unbelievable. I think all that added up and made it one of the more special ones that you'll definitely remember for a long time."
The 49ers will look to recover over the weekend and prepare for their Week 6 matchup in Tampa Bay, continuing to build momentum off one of the season's toughest victories so far.
