Shanahan on 49ers Win Over Giants: Mykel Williams Injury, Faithful Takeover, Special Teams Momentum

Head coach Kyle Shanahan met with reporters Monday afternoon following the San Francisco 49ers 34-24 win over the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium. The team improved to 6-3 on the season behind complementary football in all three phases. Here are the top takeaways from the head coach following the Week 9 win:

Defensive Line Depth to Be Tested

The 49ers received tough news following Sunday's game as rookie defensive lineman Mykel Williams was diagnosed with a torn ACL and lateral meniscus injury, officially ending his season.

"I just hurt for him," Shanahan said. "I was loving watching him battle through all this stuff... I'm just really disappointed that he is not able to really continue developing through this year because I believe we've got a hell of a player who's going to really figure this out in the run game and the pass game. He still will, but I hurt for him that he isn't going to do that over the next half of this year."

The 49ers will continue to lean on the depth of their defensive line, including newcomers Clelin Ferrell and Keion White, both of whom played significant roles against the Giants. Shanahan noted White has shown strong potential as an interior rusher, and Ferrell's experience adds valuable versatility. The team also expects Bryce Huff to return to action this week, bolstering the defensive line rotation.

Green Shines in Secondary

The 49ers secondary took a step forward in coverage during Sunday's matchup, and Shanahan highlighted cornerback Renardo Green as one of the defensive standouts.

"I thought we definitely looked improved from the week before in Houston. I thought the guys played tighter in coverage. I think there was much less mistakes in the pass game. I thought Renardo had one of his better games, thought he made a few plays there. The one thing, we did miss too many tackles, which we need to clean up, but I thought the guys took a step in the right direction."

Green finished the day with one of his best performances of the season, allowing just six yards on three targets with two pass breakups and no touchdowns, earning the highest overall defensive grade on the team (76.2).

Faithful Take Over MetLife Stadium

Shanahan praised the traveling Faithful and the NY-based 49ers fans for once again turning a road stadium into a home-field advantage.

"The Houston game was so disappointing because our fans take over a lot of stadiums, but they took over the Houston stadium like it was L.A. So, it was so disappointing that we didn't give them much to cheer about that whole game. So, that was really cool in New York that we had a bunch of fans there too and it was really cool in the second half to watch the other team have to use the silent cadence. Anytime you do that, that shows you've got some really cool fans who made the trip."

There were loud "C-M-C" and "juice" chants that echoed from the crowd on Christian McCaffrey and Kyle Juszczyk's big plays. The crowd noise grew so strong in the fourth quarter that, even using a silent snap count, the Giants offensive line committed back-to-back false starts.

Special Teams Continues to Impress

Shanahan expressed pride in how the special teams unit has performed throughout the season, particularly amid injuries that have impacted depth across the roster.

"I've been really proud of our special teams this year. I think they've gotten better throughout the year. I think they're playing really well as a unit in all the phases, not just one in particular. I think our returners have gotten better. We've gotten better at blocking for them. I think our punter, our long snapper, and our kicker are playing at high level. I think it's a huge credit to them, especially as we get all these injuries. People talk about guys having to play on offense and defense when guys are hurt. Well, they're all taken from special teams too. So, for them to get better as we've been banged up, give a lot of credit to those guys for pulling that off."

Kicker Eddy Piñeiro continued his historic streak, hitting all six of his kicks, including a 54-yarder, to extend his perfect run to 19 consecutive field goals. He tied Phil Dawson for the fourth-longest streak in franchise history and matched the second-most successful field goals from 50-plus yards in a single season.

Looking Ahead

Up next, a rematch against the Los Angeles Rams, this time at Levi's® Stadium. The 49ers first played the Rams this season in Week 5 "Thursday Night Football" at SoFi Stadium and defeated Los Angeles 26-23 in overtime. The team will rest and rehab for their player off-day on Tuesday and pick practices back up this Wednesday.
