The 49ers will look for their fourth consecutive win over the Falcons on Sunday.

To do so, San Francisco will have to snap a franchise-record 12-game losing streak and beat one of the hottest teams in the NFL.

Pregame

The 49ers will be without five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Staley for a second consecutive week.

But the biggest news from the team's inactive player list does not have to do with a starter. It's the news that backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert is inactive for the first time this season that has everyone talking.

Christian Ponder will serve as San Francisco's reserve quarterback behind Colin Kaepernick.

Torrey Smith (concussion) is also inactive after being ruled out on Friday. Inside linebacker Gerald Hodges is also not suiting up for Week 15. He will miss the game due to a coach's decision. Rookie receiver Aaron Burbridge will start in place of Smith. Michael Wilhoite will replace Hodges in the starting lineup.

As for the offensive line, Zane Beadles will handle the left-tackle duties, and Andrew Tiller will line up at left guard with the first-team offense.

The Falcons will be without their star receiver, Julio Jones. Here are their inactive players for Week 15:

First Quarter

After a delay to start the game due to an issue with an unleveled goal post in the Georgia Dome, the 49ers started the game with the ball first. Kaepernick threw the ball a bit too high to Jeremy Kerley on a crossing route on 3rd-and-1. San Francisco was forced to punt.

Falcons special teams ace Chris Weems returned the punt 42 yards to San Francisco's 47-yard line. Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan tossed an 18-yard pass to Mohamed Sanu for a first down. Nick Bellore was shaken up on the drive. The 49ers entered the game with two active inside linebackers. Reserve safety Vinnie Sunseri replaced Bellore at linebacker. Eli Harold recorded his second career sack on Ryan, but the Falcons were able to convert another first down on a short Ryan pass to Joshua Perkins. Devonta Freeman scored on the next play from five yards out.

Atlanta drove 47 yards on six plays (2:57) to take the early lead.

The Falcons lead 7-0 with 10:31 left in the first quarter

Cornerback JaCorey Shepherd returned the ensuing kick 41 yards out to San Francisco's 45-yard line. Pierre Garçon fumbled the ball on the second play of the drive. Atlanta recovered at the 50. Falcons linebacker Deion Jones knocked the ball loose and it was recovered by safety Keanu Neal.

Antione Bethea replaced Sunseri at linebacker. Dontae Johnson has entered the game at safety in place of Bethea. Meanwhile, Ryan got right to work, connecting with wideout Taylor Gabriel for a gain of 20. A few plays later, Ryan hit Gabriel in the back of the end zone for a 9-yard touchdown.

Bellore (elbow) is questionable to return.

The Falcons lead is now 14-0 with 7:40 to play in the first quarterThe 49ers went three-and-out and punted back to the Falcons.San Francisco has inserted Ahmad Brooks at inside linebacker. Bethea has moved back to safety. It hasn't affected the Falcons, who continue to move the ball. Atlanta is now back in the red zone.

The Falcons converted a 3rd-and-3 with a short pass to Freeman out of the backfield. Atlanta is 1st-and-goal from the 1. DeForest Buckner recorded a tackle-for-loss, but Ryan lobbed a third-down touchdown pass to rookie tight end Austin Hooper for a 9-yard score.

The Falcons lead 21-0 with :40 left in the first quarterSan Francisco ended the first quarter with its first, first down of the game. Kaepernick found Quinton Patton for a 12-yard gain.

The 49ers trail, 21-0, and were out-gained 157 to 24 in total yards.

Second QuarterPatton was shaken up on the first play of the second quarter, running towards the sideline on a shovel pass play. Patton lost nine yards.

Bellore (elbow) has been ruled out.

Kaepernick threw his longest pass of the game - a 45-yard pass to tight end Blake Bell. The second-year pro, however, was banged up when a Falcons player landed on top of his shoulder while bringing him down to the turf.

Patton (foot) was carted to the locker room and is questionable to return.

Kaepernick got the 49ers on the board with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Celek, who beat his man with a seam route down the left slot. The scoring drive lasted six plays and went 75 yards.

The Falcons lead is now 21-7 with 12:45 left in the second quarter

Momentum shift? Aldrick Robinson just caught a 59-yard pass from Ryan and the Falcons are back in the red zone.

Wilhoite stripped Freeman and recovered the ball at the 1-yard line to thwart Atlanta's fourth straight trip to the red zone.

Patton (foot) has been ruled out. Bell (shoulder) has been announced as questionable to return.

Hyde just ran for gains of 17 and 12 to put San Francisco at their own 38-yard line. Kaepernick was sacked by Vic Beasley on third down to end the 49ers drive.

Jimmie Ward (shoulder) is questionable to return.

Rookie Rashard Robinson has replaced Ward at cornerback. Keith Reaser is lining up at slot corner.

Freeman and Tevin Coleman are taking turns making big gains through the ground. The Falcons are back in the red zone. Freeman scored on a 9-yard power run, breaking through three tackles on his way to finding the end zone.

The Falcons now lead 28-7 with 4:28 left in the second quarter

Kaepernick has the 49ers back in the red zone after a couple of short completions and big runs by Hyde. The starting running back is now at 43 yards on eight carries.

Kaepernick finished the drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Rod Streater. It was the wide receiver's first touchdown catch with the 49ers. The short pass finished off a 13-play, 75-yard scoring drive. Dawson's extra point was no good.

The Falcons lead is now 28-13 with :13 left in second quarterThird Quarter

Atlanta opens the second half with the ball. Freeman continues to churn out hard-earned yards. He's now at 95 yards on 14 carries. The Falcons are in 49ers territory, but a third-down fumble from Coleman will force Atlanta's first punt of the game. Brooks was responsible for knocking the ball out.San Francisco was unable to capitalize on the punt. They were forced to punt the ball back to Atlanta.

The home team proceeded to drive 25 yards on six plays to set up a 50-yard Matt Bryant field goal.

The Falcons now lead 31-13 with 6:29 left in the third quarterFreeman is having a day. He passed the 100-yard mark and scored his third touchdown of the game on a 34-yard run around the left edge. Freeman is now at 139 rushing yards.

The Falcons now lead 38-13 with 1:42 left in the third quarterMartin (ankle) has been ruled out for the duration of the game. Beadles move to center. Rookie John Theus made his NFL debut at left tackle. The 49ers were forced to punt.

Fourth Quarter

San Francisco forced a second punt from Atlanta in this game. The team will be without Bell (shoulder) and Ward (shoulder) for the rest of the game.

The 49ers have punted for a fourth time in the second half.

Matt Schaub replaced Ryan on the ensuing drive. He completed his only pass of the game for a 16-yard completion. The Falcons drove down the field and Bryant hit a 41-yard field goal.

The Falcons lead 41-13 with 1:13 left in the game
