Collins Named HS Coach of the Week

The San Francisco 49ers Charlie Wedemeyer Coach of the Week award for Week 9 goes to Kevin Collins from Lincoln High School.

Last Friday the Lincoln High School Lions defeated the Westmont Warriors 56-28 to clinch at least a share of the Central Coast-Santa Teresa Divisional crown.

After a 1-9 season last year, the Lions opened up 2010 with a shaky 0-2 start. Most would think that the panic of having another one-win season would start creeping in the Lions' minds, but not for this group of young men. Instead they banded together to win six straight games and took themselves to the top of their division.

When asked about how he manages to get his team ready week-to-week and not let the pressure of either two straight losses or five straight wins affect its play, Collins had this to say.

"We never talk about next week's opponent. We take a blue collar approach to every game and we know that* *this game is the most important."

Against Westmont, Lincoln's "blue collar" wing-t offense was run to perfection  Running back Josh Ayala carried the ball 27 times for 256 yards and four touchdowns in addition to Stephen Robertson's 19 carries for 153 yards and three scores.

Defensively, the Lions had solid performances from inside linebackers Michael Hidalgo and Miguel Leyua. Collins said defensive end Cole Delvalle "shutdown the outside run game" with the help of outside linebackers Ramond Prado and Justin Grant.

With this win the Lions set themselves up to play for the outright Santa Teresa title this week against Willow Glen. We wish Coach Collins and the Lions the best of luck.

For Lincoln's outstanding team effort, the San Francisco 49ers have selected Coach Kevin Collins as the Charlie Wedemeyer High School Coach of the Week.

In addition to being named Coach of the Week, Coach Collins and the Lincoln High School football program will receive $1,000 from the 49ers Foundation.
