Colin Kaepernick Finds Nine Different Targets

Colin Kaepernick started day two of San Francisco 49ers training camp by completing five consecutive passes to five different targets in a 7-on-7 passing drill.

Kaepernick completed passes to wide receivers Anquan Boldin, Quinton Patton, Devon Wylie, tight end Derek Carrier and then found Michael Crabtree for a 20-yard touchdown pass down the right hash-marks in a red zone period.

In the third 7-on-7 period of the day, Kaepernick completed passes to tight ends Garrett Celek and Asante Cleveland. The 49ers quarterback also completed a slant pattern to new wideout Stevie Johnson.

In team periods, Kaepernick found Brandon Lloyd on a deep cross and Crabtree on a quick pass. Kaepernick overthrew a deep ball to Crabtree 45 yards down the field in the final period of the day.

Unofficially, Kaepernick completed 12 of 18 passes in 7-on-7 and team periods. He especially looked sharp threading the needle down the middle of the field.

Offensive Play of the Day

Carrier's reception was the most impressive grab. With Garrett Celek on the Physically Unable to Perform list, nursing a back injury, the 49ers have more tight end reps to give out.

Carrier made the most of his opportunities, including his 30-yard high reception down the middle on a Kaepernick pass.

The second-year tight end was called up to the 53-man roster last season reached up to pluck a ball thrown in between safeties Craig Dahl and Jimmie Ward.

Unofficially, we saw Carrier make three catches on the day.

Defensive Play of the Day

Another second-year player turned in a pair of memorable moments. We'll highlight both of them.

Late in the practice, defensive tackle Quinton Dial made a would-be tackle-for-loss on a draw play for Frank Gore. Dial also got in the backfield on a pass-rush against tackle Jonathan Martin a few plays later.

Participation Update

Kendall Hunter did not finish the practice. The fourth-year running back caught a swing pass out of the backfield and went to the ground after trying to make an up-field move. Hunter was checked out by doctors and walked off to the locker room under his own power.

Bruce Ellington, who was taken off the non-football injury list, returned to practice for warmups. The rookie receciver didn't practice with the team. Instead, he worked out on the turf field. Another NFI list member, running back Marcu Lattimore, ran sprints during practice.

Defensive tackle Justin Smith (shoulder) and offensive tackle Anthony Davis (shoulder) did not practice.

Members of the PUP (physically unable to perform) list did not practice. The group includes linebacker NaVorro Bowman (knee), tight end Garrett Celek (back), nose Ian Williams (leg) linebacker Aaron Lynch (hamstring) and defensive tackle Kaleb Ramsey.

NFI (non-football injury) list members also were not practicing. The group included Lattimore (hamstring, knee), center Marcus Martin (ankle), fullback Trey Millard (knee), cornerback Keith Reaser (knee) and guard Brandon Thomas (knee).

Observations

-Rookie cornerbacks Kenneth Acker and Dontae Johnson showed good coverage in one-on-one drills against the team's veteran wideouts.

-The team's five quarterbacks participated in an accuracy contest. Each passer was given six chances to throw a ball into a net. Josh Johnson took home the victory by completing four of his six tosses.

  • Ward broke up a slant to Stevie Johnson during a 7-on-7 period. The first-round pick continues to show a quick step when breaking on inward passes.

-Linebacker Chase Thomas dropped an interception on a Kaepernick pass intended for McDonald on a deep crossing route.

-Pro Bowl pass-rusher Ahmad Brooks beat tackle Carter Bykowski for a would-be sack on Josh Johnson in a team period.
