The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of tackle Marvel Smith. Terms of the contract were not announced.

Smith (6-5, 321) enters his tenth season after originally being drafted in the second round (38th pick overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers out of the Arizona State. During his nine seasons with the Steelers, Smith played in 111 games with 108 starts to go along with 10 starts in the postseason. He lined up at right tackle his first three years for Pittsburgh before serving as the team's starting left tackle the past six seasons. A native of Oakland, Smith attended Skyline High School, where he became the school's first lineman to receive a Division I-A scholarship.
