The San Francisco 49ers announced on Friday they have signed OL Laken Tomlinson to a three-year contract extension through the 2021 season.

"Laken is a very talented player who has improved consistently since joining the team one week before last year's season opener," said 49ers General Manager John Lynch. "This offseason, his hard work and dedication paid off as he continued to progress and performed at a high level. We were confident we could work out a contract extension with Laken and we are fired up to get that done before training camp."

Originally acquired in a trade with the Detroit Lions on August 31, 2017, Tomlinson (6-3, 312) started the final 15 games of the 2017 season at left guard for the 49ers. Originally selected in the first round (28th overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft by Detroit, he has appeared in 47 games (39 starts) and made one postseason start throughout his three-year career (2015-17). In 2016, he appeared in all 16 regular season games with the Lions (10 starts) and started in the team's Wild Card game against the Seattle Seahawks.

A 26-year-old native of Chicago, IL, Tomlinson made 52 career starts in four seasons (2011-14) at Duke University. As a senior in 2014, he earned First-Team All-America honors and was named First-Team All-ACC for the second-consecutive season.
