The San Francisco 49ers have exercised the fifth-year option on DL Arik Armstead for the 2019 season. In addition, the team has also signed seven undrafted rookie free agents and waived the following five players: LB Jimmie Gilbert, LB Boseko Lokombo, DB Dexter McCoil, LB Donavin Newsom and CB Channing Stribling.
The 49ers originally selected Armstead (6-7, 292) in the first round (17th overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft. Armstead has appeared in 30 games (11 starts) throughout his three-year career, tallying 56 tackles, 6.0 sacks, one forced fumble and one pass defense. In 2017, he started in each of the team’s first six games of the season and registered 16 tackles and 1.5 sacks prior to being placed on the Injured Reserve List on October 17, 2017.
A 24-year-old native of Sacramento, CA, Armstead attended the University of Oregon. In 39 games with the Ducks, he finished with 87 tackles, 4.0 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and two passes defensed.
