The San Francisco 49ers announced Monday they have claimed LB Thaddeus Gibson* *off waivers from the Pittsburgh Steelers. In order to make room on the roster for Gibson, the team placed C Eric Heitmann on the Injured Reserve List with a neck injury.

Gibson (6-2, 243) was a fourth round selection (116th overall) by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2010 NFL Draft. He was inactive for each of the Steelers first six games before being waived on October 31.

A native of Euclid, OH, the 23-year old Gibson starred collegiately at Ohio State where he played in 35 games (23 starts) and finished his career with 82 tackles, 10.0 sacks, 25.0 tackles for loss, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, one interception and four passes defensed. He was a college teammate of 49ers offensive tackle Alex Boone from 2006-08.
