The San Francisco 49ers announced on Friday that they have acquired WR Ted Ginn, Jr. via trade. Pending Ginn passing a physical, the 49ers will send their 2010 fifth round selection (145th overall) to the Miami Dolphins.
"First of all, I am very thankful that Trent was able to make this work out," said head coach Mike Singletary. "We added a talented player, that fit a need. He's a bundle of potential and his upside is off the charts. This guy can fly."
"We are very excited to add a player to our team with the explosiveness that Ted possesses," said director of player personnel Trent Baalke. "Ted gives our coaching staff another quality player to utilize on game day."
Ginn (5-11, 180), who was a first-round selection (9th overall) by the Miami Dolphins in the 2007 NFL Draft, has appeared in 48 games (35 starts) in his three-year career. He has recorded 128 catches for 1,664 yards with five touchdowns and 16 carries for 124 yards with two scores. Ginn was instrumental for the Dolphins on special teams, returning 36 punts for 312 yards (8.7 avg.) with one score and 147 kickoffs for 3,386 yards (23.0 avg.) with two touchdowns.
In 2009, Ginn played in 16 games (12 starts), ranking third on the Dolphins in receptions (38) and fourth in receiving yards (454). Against Indianapolis, Ginn recorded a career-high 11 catches for 108 receiving yards. The 11 receptions tied for the third-highest reception total in team history, while his 108 receiving yards were the second-most in his career (175 yards vs. Buffalo in 2008). Ginn also displayed his playmaking ability on special teams, earning AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors after returning two kickoffs (100, 101) for touchdowns against the New York Jets. The two touchdown returns off kickoffs in a single game tied an NFL record. He was later named AFC Special Teams Player of the Month (November) after having returned 21 kickoffs for 646 yards (31.7 avg.) and two touchdowns in the five-game span.
Ginn, a native of Cleveland, OH, started 31 of 37 games during his three-year collegiate career at Ohio State.
