The Faithful had questions, and I've got the answers.
Each week throughout the season, fans will have the chance to submit their questions on social media or SMS, and I'll answer them here in this dedicated Q&A series. It's an opportunity to hear directly from the Faithful and highlight the storylines you care about most.
From the South to the East Coast, the 49ers stay on the road and are now up against the New York Giants in Week 9 at MetLife Stadium. Let's dive into your questions!
Q: How is the 49ers offense going to get their team going during the Giants game on Sunday? – @marykategaraud
Sunday's matchup presents a great opportunity for the 49ers offense to rebound. The Giants defense has allowed over 33 points in back-to-back games, so it's looking like a good matchup for San Francisco to get back to playing its brand of football. Establishing the run, sustaining drives, and finishing in the red zone.
Q: What do you think about Keion White joining the team? – @ryan.production
He's a big pickup for our defensive line that's been battling injuries all season. Everyone I've talked to has mentioned White's versatility, and that's a huge strength for this group. White appeared in all 17 games for the Patriots last season, starting 13, tying for the team lead with 5.0 sacks, and totaling 56 tackles. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh praised White as a seamless fit for the 49ers system: "He's got great length, size and speed. His short-area quickness, his ability to rush the passer on the inside again as another interior pass rusher, adding more depth to that. He kind of fits into that role we have, similar to Mykel Williams outside being able to kick inside to be more of a speedy rusher active body. So, we're looking forward to getting him out there."
Q: Who's going to be the standout player for this week? – Andrew F.
Am I really going to say Christian McCaffrey again this week? Yes, I have to!! This matchup is looking too good in his favor not to, especially in the run game. The Giants rush defense has allowed 6.1 yards per carry to running backs this season, last week gave up over 100 yards to two different running backs.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said it best: "Obviously, if guys get out of a gap and we've got a chance to make them pay, we'd love to get those big ones, but challenging the hell out of our guys to run the ball. We've got an opportunity every week to do it and hopefully we can do a better job this week."
Q: Following the loss to the Texans, what did Kyle Shanahan identify as the primary focus for the team's "clean up" this week? – Mirza B.
After the loss, Shanahan pointed out several key breakdowns: "We dropped a guy in man coverage on that 50-yard check down. We can't hug up on the quarterback, we've got to stay on our guy in man. And a number of our pressures, they just didn't get home. He (C.J. Stroud) got it out quick... Completed about five slants in the game. Their 30-yard touchdown, he just beat man-coverage."
Q: What's it going to take to get off the field more consistently on third downs? – Eric L.
The defense did manage to hold Houston to just one touchdown in five red zone trips, but third down execution remains one of the biggest areas for improvement following Week 8.
Q: What's the story on you becoming a 9er Faithful? Cheers and keep up the amazing work 🫡 – @benmichel7994
Thank you! I was born in the Bay Area and raised in a 49ers-loving family. My family had season tickets dating all the way back to Kezar Stadium and stayed loyal through Candlestick to Levi's® Stadium. Sundays were always spent with family watching the game, either tailgating or a watch party from home. Their passion stuck with me and I turned it into a career. Cheering for the 49ers has always felt like home, I share a heart with this team, and sharing its story is truly a dream come true!
