49ers radio play by play announcer Joe Starkey announced his retirement from the 49ers on Thursday.

The 49ers issued the following statement:

"Joe was a model of professionalism during his 20 years with the 49ers as part of our radio broadcast team. Our history was brought to life through his signature call of "Touchdown 49ers, what a bonanza." Joe's vivid descriptions of the action on the field are etched forever in the memories of 49ers fans.

"We look forward to his broadcast of the last two games of the 2008 season capping off a career that all 49ers fans will remember. The 49ers family wishes Joe the best of luck on all his future endeavors.

"We will be making a decision on our new broadcaster during the off-season."
