The 49ers are making it official. Brock Purdy is QB1 and leader of the team for years to come.

Purdy has signed a five-year contract extension, solidifying his role as a key part of San Francisco's future. A seventh-round pick (262nd overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft, his rise from "Mr. Irrelevant" to franchise quarterback is one of the most remarkable stories in NFL history. In just three seasons, he's established himself as a Pro Bowler, Super Bowl starter, and now, the long-term leader of the 49ers offense.

"Brock is the leader of our team," head coach Kyle Shanahan said. "I've loved these three years with Brock. I plan on being with Brock here the whole time I'm here. Brock's been a stud. He's a guy I've got a lot of confidence in just as a human, but it starts with what he's done in the field these last two and a half years and capable of winning a Super Bowl with him... And I know he is capable of getting the Niners a Super Bowl in the future."

President of football operations and general manager John Lynch reflected on the moments leading up to drafting Purdy in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft:

"We did know that we liked the player," Lynch said. "There's a lot of people who deserve a lot of credit for that, those successes. One no longer working with us, (former quarterbacks coach) Brian Griese was very involved with that, (49ers pro scout) Steve Slowik, I've talked about him numerous times, but there is a great example of the process working... You can feel the conviction that they have. And so, you bring it to the entire room and Kyle (Shanahan) and I focus on it. We knew we wanted to add Brock.

"I'm glad we didn't take it to chance. We made him the last pick of the draft and it's served us well."

In 36 regular season starts, Purdy has thrown for nearly 10,000 yards with 64 touchdowns, earning a 104.9 career passer rating, one of the highest in franchise history. After taking over midway through his rookie year and going 5-0 as a starter, he finished third in AP Offensive Rookie of the Year voting. In 2023, he cemented his role as QB1, throwing for 4,280 yards and a league-leading 113.0 passer rating, leading the 49ers to Super Bowl LVIII and earning fourth place in MVP voting.

Last season, Purdy passed for 3,864 yards and 20 touchdowns, showing the poise and preparation that have made him a trusted leader in the locker room. In the postseason, Purdy has shown he's built for the biggest moments. In six playoff games, he's led the 49ers to four victories, including one of the largest comebacks in NFC Championship Game history against the Lions.

His impact goes far beyond the stat sheet. Teammates praise his humility, work ethic, and unshakeable confidence. With this extension, the team is backing the leader they believe can carry this team for the foreseeable future.
