Ray Brown enters his first season with the 49ers as the team's defensive backs/cornerbacks coach. He joins the 49ers after 15 years of collegiate coaching experience, spending the 2024 season as the secondary coach for Boston College.
Under Brown's guidance, the 2024 Boston College defense was led by DB KP Price, who registered a team-high 85 tackles and five passes defensed. Brown helped lead a defense that allowed 23.8 points per game which ranked fifth in the ACC. The Eagles defense ranked seventh in total yards per game (348.9) and eighth in total yards allowed (4,536) in the ACC in 2024.
Prior to Boston College, Brown spent eight seasons as cornerbacks coach at Washington State University (2022-23), Utah State University (2021), Troy University (2019-20) and Abilene Christian University (2016-18). During his time at Washington State, Brown helped lead a defense that allowed 22.9 points per game in 2022. In that season, Brown coached All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention selection CB Chau Smith-Wade. Prior to Washington State, Brown was part of a Utah State team that finished with an 11-3 record in 2021. At Troy, Brown coached DB Terence Dunlap to Second-Team All-Sun Belt honors as he registered 11 passes defensed and three interceptions. Brown spent three years at Abilene Christian where the team ranked sixth nationally in fourth-down defense (26.3%) and set a school record for most interceptions in 2018 (13).
Brown served as a graduate assistant/cornerbacks coach at Arizona State University (2014-15), a graduate assistant/safeties coach at Washington State University (2013) and special teams coordinator/defensive backs coach at Division II Oklahoma Baptist University (2012). Brown began his coaching career at his alma mater, East Central (OK) University, as a run game coordinator/running backs coach (2010-11).
A native of Oklahoma City, OK, Brown attended East Central for four seasons (2006-09) where he was a four-year starter at cornerback. He earned his bachelor's degree in business marketing in 2009 and later earned his master's degree from the school in sports administration in 2011. Brown and his wife, Amber, have three children: Gavin, Rylin and Peyton.
