Smith Underwent Surgery

The 49ers PR department confirmed Tuesday morning that quarterback Alex Smith underwent a surgical procedure last Thursday in Birmingham, Alabama on his injured shoulder. The procedure was describe as "not being extensive."

Smith originally had his throwing shoulder repaired last December. Prior to the 49ers home opener against the Arizona Cardinals, Smith suffered a fracture in the shoulder and was placed on injured reserve about a week later.

Smith spoke with reporters a few weeks ago, saying that the shoulder was healing up nicely, and that a decision on potential surgery would be made soon. The 49ers quarterback said at that point that even if surgery was required, it would not prevent him from being ready for the start of the off-season program.
