The San Francisco 49ers hosted a special halftime ceremony on Sunday to celebrate the induction of three-time Super Bowl champion Brent Jones into the Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. San Francisco 49ers Hall of Fame. Jones became the 33rd member to receive the honor.
A San Jose native and Santa Clara University alumnus, Jones was originally drafted in 1986 by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fifth round. He was placed on injured reserve and released before ever taking the field. Later that same year, the 49ers picked him up, a move that would define the rest of his 11-year NFL career.
In those 11 seasons, Jones earned four Pro Bowl selections, two All-Pro honors, and three Super Bowl championships. Over 143 career games (126 starts), he recorded 417 receptions for 5,195 yards, and 33 touchdowns, ranking third among tight ends in franchise history in each category.
"It was once in a lifetime⊠truly spectacular," Jones said, reflecting on his induction ceremony Saturday night.
Jones spoke on the moment he found out the news "Jed York called and said, 'Yes, I'd like to speak to the next member of the San Francisco 49ers Hall of Fame, and it buckled me," Jones said. "It was emotional for me, and Jed was spectacular... It was pretty special."
During Sunday's halftime celebration, Jones made his way down a red carpet surrounded by family, friends, and former teammates. He smiled as he took it all in, a moment of reflection on his lasting impact on the 49ers organization.
Hall of Famer and former teammate Jerry Rice introduced Jones as thousands of fans at Levi'sÂź Stadium rose to honor one of the franchise's all-time greats.
