Taumoepenu (6-1, 245) was the second of two sixth-round draft picks (202nd overall) selected by the 49ers in the 2017 NFL draft out of the University of Utah. After appearing in two games as a rookie, he was waived by the team on September 1, 2018 and signed to the practice squad the following day.

A 24-year-old native of Provo, UT, he appeared in 46 games during his four-year career for the Utes, where he recorded 73 tackles, 25.5 tackles for loss, 21.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
