Biography

Gray joins the 49ers after spending three seasons (2023-25) as assistant head coach/defense for the Atlanta Falcons and brings more than 30 years of coaching experience to the 49ers. He has served as a defensive backs coach for the Green Bay Packers (2020), Minnesota Vikings (2014-19), Seattle Seahawks (2010), and Tennessee Titans (1999-2000). He has also served as the secondary coach for the Washington Commanders (2006-09) and defensive passing game coordinator for the Packers (2021-22). In addition, Gray has made two stops as a defensive coordinator, serving five seasons (2001-05) with the Buffalo Bills and three seasons (2011-13) with the Titans. He began his NFL coaching career with the Tennessee Oilers, serving as defensive quality control for two seasons (1997-98) after spending the previous two seasons (1995-96) in the collegiate ranks as the secondary coach at Southern Methodist University.

Prior to his coaching career, Gray spent nine seasons playing defensive back in the NFL for the Los Angeles Rams (1985-91), Houston Oilers (1992) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1993). He was originally selected by the Rams with the 21st overall pick in the 1985 NFL Draft and went on to earn two AP Second-Team All-Pro honors (1986 & 1989) and four Pro Bowl selections (1987-90).
