Vernon Davis Remains Focused on Football

Vernon Davis missed his teammates. He missed the game.

So when it was time to report for training camp on Wednesday, what did the San Francisco 49ers tight end do?

He walked into the locker room just like his fellow teammates.

Davis declined to participate in offseason workouts while his agent worked on negotiating a new contract with the team that made him a first-round pick in 2006. The ninth-year veteran, however, said he worked out consistently and stayed on top of his playbook.

Davis also declined to get into specifics about his contract talks with the 49ers.

"That's in the past," Davis said to a large group of reporters hours before the team's first training camp practice. "I'm not going to worry about a new contract. That's between the team and my agent."

When asked again about his thoughts on his current situation, Davis simply said: "That's not my focus right now. That's between the team and my agent. Right now my focus is out here."

Davis recalled other teammates handling their contract negotiations and how they reported to camp while working things out with the front office.

Davis is well aware of the business side of football and said he's intent on getting back to work.

"I'm just trying to get better," said the tight end, who caught 52 passes for 850 receiving yards and a team-high 13 touchdowns last season. "The only thing I can think about right now is being out here with these guys and getting better."

Davis said it "hurt" him to be away from his teammates.

"I'm in it to win it," Davis said. "It's all about the team. It's all about winning games."

After the numerous contract-related questions, Davis was asked about the future of the 49ers offense and what changes would be made in the coming season.

A day earlier, Colin Kaepernick alluded to a few adjustments to playbook.

Davis echoed the positive reviews made by his quarterback.

"I think it's great, some of the changes they made," Davis said. "I can't really get into it like I want to, because that's our business out here. But, the playbook is tough. It's challenging, but the key is staying on top of it in the offseason.

"Even though I wasn't here, I stayed on top of the playbook because I knew I'd be back here eventually."
