Morning Tailgate: Jenkins' Potential

A.J. Jenkins is seemingly on everyone's mind these days.

In the past seven days, Jenkins' name has been discussed by his head coach, offensive coordinator, quarterback and even tight end.

There's certainly reason for it.

The former first-round pick was hampered with a leg injury early in camp, returned to enjoy productive practices and then had an uneven preseason debut. Jenkins fumbled the only reception he had against the Denver Broncos, overshadowing all the other assignments he correctly executed in the preseason opener.

The competition for coveted wide receiver spots continues to pick up the closer it gets to roster cuts. Because of that, Jenkins has been under the microscope all offseason and even more so in camp. Following a zero-catch rookie campaign, every move from the 6-foot, 200-pound wideout has been dissected.

Jenkins was targeted twice on deep balls on Monday, both went incomplete. Colin Kaepernick overthrew him down the left sideline the first time; undrafted cornerback Darryl Morris broke up the other 40-yard deep ball out of Jenkins' hands at its highest point.

Inside the locker room, the 49ers continue to encourage Jenkins to keep growing. The former first-team All-Big Ten selection and No. 30 overall pick in 2012, is being mentored by many, including Vernon Davis.

"He has a lot of potential," Davis said of Jenkins.

The 49ers are scheduled to practice at 5 p.m. PT on Tuesday.
