Jenkins Continues to Make Plays

Posted Aug 5, 2013

A.J. Jenkins picked up where he left off with another standout training camp performance.

A.J. Jenkins picked up where he left off.

The second-year wideout continued to assert himself into the 49ers pass attacking. Jenkins caught more than a half-dozen footballs at Monday’s training camp practice.

It looked as if Colin Kaepernick wanted to throw as early and as often as he could to Jenkins.

It started in the early portions of practice and carried over into the final team periods. Jenkins was easily the most targeted wideout on Monday.

The 6-foot, 200-pound wideout caught the majority of his passes from Kaepernick, too. The highlights included a deep in route on starting cornerback Tarell Brown, a deep crossing route for a 25-yard gain against undrafted rookie Daryl Morris and a pair of receptions on comeback routes where Jenkins shielded Perrish Cox away from the ball with his body.

The defense also enjoyed several standout moments. It wasn’t just a one-sided day.

NaVorro Bowman intercepted a red zone 7-on-7 pass from Kaepernick to Chad Hall. The shifty wide receiver reached back to catch a slant pattern, but couldn’t handle the ball. It popped in the air directly into Bowman’s hands. Bowman also broke up a Scott Tolzien pass intended for rookie tight end MarQueis Gray.

Training Camp Notes

-Jonathan Goodwin return to practice, but wore a blue, non-contact jersey. The veteran center took part in individual drills, but did not join the team for 11-on-11 work. Joe Staley returned to practice and took part in all drills.

-Eric Reid joined the first-team defense once again at free safety. His best play of the day was a blitz around the left edge of the line in 11-on-11 work. Reid swallowed up undrafted rookie running back D.J. Harper for a tackle-for-loss. Reid also broke on a pass intended for undrafted wideout Chuck Jacobs, but dropped an interception deep down the field.

-The starting secondary enjoyed a productive day. Carlos Rogers had several pass breakups and Donte Whitner recorded his first interception of camp on a deep ball thrown by rookie quarterback B.J. Daniels.

-Garrett Celek caught a red zone touchdown from Kaepernick on a 20-yard post pattern in 11-on-11 work. Anquan Boldin also caught a slant touchdown from Kaepernick in a 7-on-7 period, too.

-Glenn Dorsey and Ian Williams both recorded sacks on the day, but Williams once again lined up with the first-team defense at nose tackle. Second-year defensive tackle Tony Jerod-Eddie also applied pressure from the left side of the line on several occasions. Demarcus Dobbs, too, had a solid day. He almost intercepted a pass that he tipped at the line of scrimmage.

-Rookie cornerback Marcus Cooper recorded his first interception of camp with a deep takeaway against Tolzien who looked for new wideout Lavelle Hawkins 30 yards downfield.
