The San Francisco 49ers announced on Monday the signing of QB Troy Smith to a one-year deal. In order to make room for Smith on the roster, the 49ers have waived QB Nate Davis.

Smith (6-0, 217), formerly a fifth-round selection (174th overall) by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2007 NFL Draft, has appeared in 14 games (2 starts) during his three-year career. He has completed 48 of 89 pass attempts for 558 yards, three touchdowns, one interception and a quarterback rating of 79.7. Smith, who is 1-1 as a starter, has also registered 109 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 29 carries.

Smith, a 26-year old from Cleveland, OH, starred collegiately at Ohio State, where he won the 2006 Heisman Memorial Trophy and led the Buckeyes to the 2007 BCS National Championship Game. He was also the first starting quarterback in the school's history to win three straight games against Michigan.

Smith attended Glenville High School in Cleveland, OH, where he played alongside his future Ohio State and 49ers teammate WR Ted Ginn Jr. The Buckeye was also a college teammate of 49ers T Alex Boone (2005-06).
