A Niner Blog, DJack, Bryant Johnson

Over on our social networking site, 49ersfaithful.net, we have a few official team bloggers including some staff members and two of our players in Manny Lawson and Marcus Hudson. Here's a blog from 49ers.com writer Chrissy Mauck with this week's latest news from 49ers Headquarters.

SATURDAY, 9:30AM PST

This morning the team released veteran WR Darrell Jackson.

If early Friday morning's report from ESPN's Michael Smith that the 49ers have agreed to terms with Cardinals unrestricted free agent WR Bryant Johnson do come to fruition, that leaves Issac Bruce, Arnaz Battle, Jason Hill, Johnson, and Ashely Lelie as the key players to fight it out for playing time. The 49ers also have CJ Brewer and Jerard Rabb on the current roster.

The team will not officially comment on the signing of a player until he has passed a physical and actually signed a contract. As of now, this has yet to occur with Johnson, whose agent has also confirmed to local media that he has agreed to terms.

I will greatly miss DJack, who we traded for last year in the draft with a fourth-round pick. He and Marques Douglas were both tremendous contributors to the website, with DJack obviously having his own column.  I know he was very happy about getting a chance to make plays late in the season, and I know that is something he will continue wherever he lands next.

THURSDAY 2:00PM PST

LB Takeo Spikes is in town for a visit with the 49ers. Spikes, a two-time Pro Bowl linebacker was released a week ago today by the Philadelphia Eagles.

In his only season with the Eagles, Spikes finished second on the team with 139 tackles. He missed the final two games of the season after having surgery on his shoulder.

The ten-year veteran was traded by Buffalo to Philly last March.

THURSDAY 12:30PM PST

Former 49ers defensive end Marques Douglas has reportedly agreed to a deal with the Tampa Bay Bucs.

THURSDAY - 8:30AM PST

I read last night on nfl.com via the reporting of Adam Schefter that LB Takeo Spikes is visiting our facility today.  The team will only confirm a visit once a player is actually in the building, so if he shows up today, I'll be sure to post something.

TUESDAY - 4:00PM PST

It was reported about ten days ago that third-year running back Michael Robinson had signed an extension with the team. Since M-Rob is spending his off-season in Arizona, the contract was sent off for his signature, and returned as of today. The team doesn't typically issue a press release on contract extensions, but it is an important move. The more players the team locks up through extensions, the more likely it can avoid getting cap strapped like it did a few years ago when they had to part ways with LB Julian Peterson.

As an update to last week's Around the Division piece, Arizona has reportedly agreed to terms on a contract extension  that will keep WR Larry Fitzgerald in a Cardinals uniform for the next four years.

The Seahawks added Julius Jones, formerly of the Cowboys, to the mix at running back with TJ Duckett and Shaun Alexander. Alexander's agent has subsequently asked to meet with the team to discuss Alexander's future with the club.
