The San Francisco 49ers selected Ohio State running back
San Francisco has drafted at least one running back in each draft since 2009.
Hyde becomes the franchise's highest drafted running back since
The 49ers executed two trades in the second round before picking Hyde, a 6-foot, 230-pound running back.
San Francisco traded the No. 56 overall pick (second round) and the No. 242 selection (seventh round) of the 2014 NFL Draft to the Denver Broncos in exchange for the No. 63 overall pick, 171 overall pick and a fourth-round pick in 2015.
Shortly after, the 49ers moved up in the second round in a trade with the Miami Dolphins to make Hyde the 57th selection. The 49ers acquired the 57th pick for Miami's second-round selection, 63rd overall and a fifth-round pick, 171st overall.
When it was all said and done, Hyde was the selection.
The Ohio State runner said he was eager to learn from 49ers rushing king
"That's a guy I compare myself to," Hyde told the Bay Area media in his post-selection conference call.
Hyde, the 2013 Big Ten Conference running back of the year, first met with the 49ers at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Hyde believes he can help San Francisco's respected running attack in the coming years.
"I'm so excited to get out there," he said.
Here's the Ohio State running back's scouting report courtesy of NFL.com:
Very well built -- looks every bit the part. Outstanding size, explosive power and run strength -- can be his own blocker and create his own holes. Punishes linebackers running downhill and almost always falls forward. Superb contact balance and finishing strength -- does not go down easily and can barrel through arm tackles. Extremely powerful short-yardage/goal-line runner. Gets better with a lather as the game progresses. Took over the game in the fourth quarter vs. Northwestern (2013) and willed team to victory. Surprisingly quick in short spaces and can plant hard and go. Is solid in pass protection and can stonewall blitzers in their tracks. Good awareness and anticipation to react to stunts and adjust to movement. Soft hands-catcher. Plucked the ball very naturally at his pro-day workout.
