Jarryd Hayne did two things when he first arrived in California last year to chase his NFL dream: Book a hotel room and buy a regulation football at Target.
Those were just a couple of new pieces of information we learned about Hayne during a 20-minute feature aired by "60 Minutes Australia" over the weekend.
The profile took viewers behind the scenes throughout Hayne's unprecedented journey from Australian rugby league stardom to just another rookie free agent in the NFL.
The film crew followed Hayne for months to chronicle the experiment, which began with the 28-year-old turning down a $1.5 million contract with the Parramatta Eels to sign a much less lucrative deal with the San Francisco 49ers.
Highlights of the segment included a look back at Hayne's humble childhood in the Sydney suburb of Minto, how he rose to fame and what prompted him to give it all up to move to America.
"I'm not normal, you know?" Hayne said. "I think that's what the world thinks life is about – to have a big house and have a nice car. But you know, for me it's about being on an adventure, finding out who you are, and pushing and growing as a person."
