5 Things to Know about 49ers Guard Joshua Garnett

Posted May 3, 2016

Get to know the No. 28 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, a mauling offensive guard from Stanford.

The San Francisco 49ers decided they weren’t finished in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft after selecting DeForest Buckner with the seventh overall pick. Instead, Trent Baalke and Co. swung a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs to acquire the No. 28 pick.

San Francisco used that selection on Stanford guard Joshua Garnett. Here are five things to help you get to know the man who Trent Baalke called “the best run-blocking offensive lineman, interior guy in the entire draft.”

1. He's the reigning Outland Trophy winner

Before going through Garnett’s laundry list of collegiate accolades, it makes sense to start with the most prominent. The Outland Trophy is given annually to the nation’s top interior lineman. In 2015, Garnett took home the honor.

The former Cardinal also won the Morris Trophy (Pac-12 Lineman of the Year), became the ninth unanimous First-Team All-American in Stanford history and was a First-Team All-Pac-12 selection.

Not a bad season for the senior caption.

2. He's a mauler

“I’m a mean, nasty player,” Garnett said of his playing style on a call with 49ers.com. “I like to finish blocks, get the juice going and bring the intensity."

That self-scouting report can be seen when combing through Garnett’s game film. Here are a few notable clips.

3. His parents are 49ers Faithful

Despite being from Puyallup, Wash., Garnett said his parents are avid fans of the red and gold.

His father, Scott, played in the NFL for four seasons as a defensive lineman. Scott’s career included a stint with the 49ers.

4. He came to Stanford as a top high school recruit

Garnett was the state of Washington’s top-ranked player in 2012 and a five-star recruit by Scout.com. The nation’s second-ranked guard was a three-time all-state player during his prep career. His accolades at Puyallup High School earned Garnett a spot in the Under Armor All-American Bowl Game.
