49ers Team Physician Timothy McAdams Receives Top Research Award

Posted Mar 15, 2017

The San Francisco 49ers medical director and head team physician has been given a prestigious award, handed out annually by the NFL Physicians Society.

The NFL Combine is a well-known event for its showcase of each year’s top collegiate prospects.

But while NFL hopefuls record blazing 40-yard dash times, the week in Indianapolis also serves as an annual meeting of the league’s top medical minds. It’s an opportunity for the most heralded names in the industry to share their latest research and educate themselves on breakthroughs in the world of sports medicine.

This year, The NFL Physicians Society awarded San Francisco 49ers head physician Dr. Timothy McAdams with the Arthur C. Rettig Award for his academic excellence in research in advancing the health and safety of players in the NFL. Dr. McAdams presented his research at the NFLPS scientific meeting during the combine. The study, titled “Video Analysis of ACL Injuries in the National Football League,” looked at video of ACL injuries from three past NFL seasons to determine the mechanism of injury and pave the way for ACL injury prevention programs in the NFL.

"I am proud and honored to receive this prestigious award and be recognized by my peers," McAdams said. "My hope for the future is that through the efforts of NFL team physician research we can continue to investigate ways to make the great game of football as safe as possible through injury prevention programs,” McAdams said.

McAdams just completed his 11th season with the 49ers and his fourth as the team's medical director and head team physician. He’s also a consultant team physician for the San Francisco Giants since 2012 and a team physician for the Golden State Warriors. Outside of his duties in professional sports, McAdams serves as a clinical professor and orthopaedic surgeon. His clinical focus includes sports medicine, sports injuries, knee surgery, knee injuries, shoulder and elbow surgery, hand surgery and ankle injuries.
