49ers Sign WR Torrey Smith to Five-year Contract

The San Francisco 49ers announced on Wednesday that they have signed wide receiver Torrey Smith to a five-year deal.

Smith (6-0, 205) was originally drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the second round (58th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft. Over his four-year career, Smith has played in 64 games (62 starts) and has registered 213 receptions for 3,591 yards (16.9 average) and 30 scores. His 30 career touchdown receptions rank second in Ravens franchise history, while his 44 receptions of 25-or-more yards are the most in franchise history. Since entering the league in 2011, he is tied for seventh in the NFL with 44, 25-plus yard receptions.

In 2014, Smith appeared and started in all 16 regular season games and both playoff contests for the Ravens. He registered 49 receptions for 767 yards and a career-high 11 touchdowns, becoming the first Ravens player with 10-or-more touchdown receptions since 1996. During his rookie season in 2011, Smith recorded 50 receptions, 841 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, all Ravens franchise rookie records.

A 26-year-old native of Colonial Beach, Va., Smith attended the University of Maryland, where he appeared in 38 games (28 starts). He finished third in school history with 152 receptions and second with 2,215 yards, while adding 19 touchdowns in three seasons. The Ravens Walter Payton Man of the Year selection each of the past two years, he established The Torrey Smith Foundation in order to provide educational support, opportunities, and resources for children.

The wideout played collegiately at Maryland before spending the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Ravens.
