49ers RB Reggie Bush Has Been 'A Wonderful Addition'

Minicamp hyperbole is in full effect around 32 NFL clubs this offseason.

We get that here at 49ers.com. In fact, we own it.

But in the case of 10-year veteran running back Reggie Bush, the flowery praise being thrown his way is legit.

The newcomer to the San Francisco 49ers competitive backfield has earned his recognition from his coaches.

"He has a lot of energy in his legs and in his body and his attitude," coach Jim Tomsula told reporters midway through the team's veteran minicamp. "What a wonderful addition in all aspects."

More than just a veteran presence in a young group of running backs, Bush's on-field performance has opened eyes on two fronts. The running back with 466 career receptions (second most on San Francisco's current roster), appears to be a versatile safety blanket for Colin Kaepernick in the short passing game. Bush, who still has explosion when carrying the ball, also offered up his services as a punt returner.

Talk about a team player.

It's no wonder why coaches are raving about Bush's presence this offseason.

Bush figures to be one of many running backs who will look to fill the void left by franchise stalwart Frank Gore, who signed with the Indianapolis Colts in free agency.

Offensive coordinator Geep Chryst knows the topic is a pressing one this offseason.

"That's probably going to be the No. 1 thing for fans, to look at the Niners and not see No. 21, Frank Gore, in there," the 49ers play-caller said. "But Reggie's been a really nice addition. I think he's really happy here. He's around a lot with a smile on his face and that adds to the chemistry."

Bush, 30, is with his fourth team of his NFL career. The one-time Super Bowl champion with the New Orleans Saints still comes across as a hungry player who is motivated to continue producing at the game's highest level.

Coaches have recognized that fire.

"I think he's got a lot of really good football left in him," Chryst said. "I would say that's the No. 1 thing, just how energetic, how conditioned and how eager he is to take practice reps. That's a great thing. We're coaches, we like practice. I actually get the sense that he likes practice, too.

"We've enjoyed him. We have a nice feel for what Reggie can do."

The OC noted that Bush has done well in building chemistry with Kaepernick, both with non-verbal communication and on-field production. In turn, Bush said he's seen growth from Chryst's unit at the conclusion of a nine-week offseason program.

"I think the offense has really started clicking," Bush said. "It seems like we're really starting to find our identity as a team, but there's still much more football of that needs to be played. It's still early."

When asked to share more details of that identity, the wise veteran said it wouldn't be prudent to reveal such information.

Well-played.

"There's so much opportunity in this offense for me to be able and go out and showcase my talents," Bush went on to say. "They're using me all over the place, including special teams. I'm just excited at the challenge. I think it's going to be a fun season."
