Niner Talk: Quinton Patton on OTAs

Posted May 30, 2013

Quinton Patton, a two-time All-WAC performer, joined our Niner Talk podcast to share insight on his early experiences with the 49ers.

San Francisco’s fourth-round draft pick has quite the personality. Quinton Patton, a two-time All-WAC performer, joined our Niner Talk podcast to share insight on his early experiences with the 49ers.

The outgoing wide receiver explained some of the lessons he’s learning during Organized Team Activities from veterans on the roster, plus detailed his epic draft story, the one where he prematurely flew out to the Bay Area to report to team headquarters.

Patton is eager to contribute this season and is working hard to help the 49ers passing game.

“My goal is just to make an impact any way that I can, no matter what it is,” the 6-foot, 204-pound wideout said.

Here are some of the key quotes from Patton’s podcast interview with 49ers.com:

On the tips he’s received from 49ers veterans

"The process is going pretty good. You just heard Vernon Davis come over and holler at me, he’s really been helping me out with my hands, catching every ball, extending my hands. Since Anquan Boldin’s been out here, he’s been helping me with my releases. (Colin) Kaepernick, he’s been helping me with all the plays."

On Boldin’s approach to catching passes all over the field

"That’s his ball when it goes up, no matter if it’s going to somebody else, he’s going to catch the ball any way that he can. I’ve never seen anything like it. I might’ve seen it on TV, but not with my own eyes."

On Patton’s early arrival to the Bay Area

"After the draft on that following Monday I bought a plane ticket and came out here. I just thought that you get drafted and you come out and start working with the team.

After I got a rental car, I got a call from Coach Harbaugh and Coach Harbaugh was like, ‘Hey, Quinton what are you doing?’ I said I was about to be at the facility. He said, ‘You can’t be here, man. I’m sorry.’

He just told me I had earned a lot of respect from people around here with the first good impression and that he would have done the same thing."

On the rookie draft class already bonding

"We’re forming a good bond. Me and Vance (McDonald) our lockers are right by each other. And another person, Chuck Jacobs from Utah State, an undrafted free agent, a wide receiver, they beat us for the WAC Championship. I’m still kind of mad about that, but yeah, everybody is starting to get close."
