Shane Day is in his fifth season with the 49ers and second as the team's quarterbacks coach, having previously served as San Francisco's offensive quality control coach for three seasons (2007-09). Day spent the prior three years (2016-18) as the tight ends coach of the Miami Dolphins.
In 2019, Day worked with QB Jimmy Garoppolo, as he completed 329 of 476 attempts (69.1 percent) for 3,978 yards and 27 touchdowns with a passer rating of 102.0, earning Comeback Player of the Year honors from Sporting News. His 69.1 completion percentage in 2019 ranked tied for fourth in the NFL (min. 200 attempts) and his 27 passing touchdowns ranked tied for fifth. Garoppolo's 69.1 completion percentage also ranked third in franchise history and was the highest in a single season since 1994 (QB Steve Young – 70.4 percent). He also ranked fourth in franchise history for the most passing yards (3,978) and completions (329) in a single season.
In 2018 with Miami, Day worked with second-round draft pick, TE Mike Gesicki, who finished the season with 22 receptions for 202 yards (9.2 average). The year earlier, TE Julius Thomas caught 41 passes for 388 yards (9.5 average) and ranked third on the team with three touchdowns.
