Shane Day rejoins the 49ers as the team’s quarterbacks coach in 2019, having previously served as San Francisco’s offensive quality control coach for three seasons (2007-09). He spent the previous three years (2016-18) as the tight ends coach of the Miami Dolphins.
In 2018, Day worked with second-round draft pick, TE Mike Gesicki, who finished the season with 22 receptions for 202 yards (9.2 average). The year earlier, TE Julius Thomas caught 41 passes for 388 yards (9.5 average) and ranked third on the team with three touchdowns.
In his first season with the Dolphins in 2016, Day helped Miami have their most successful season since 2008, winning 10 games, including nine of the final 11 to finish the season, and earn a playoff berth. After losing TE Jordan Cameron to injury in Week 3, Day prepared TE Dion Sims for one of the best seasons of his career as he started 11 games and finished with career highs in receptions (26) and receiving touchdowns (four) to go along with 256 yards. Former undrafted TE MarQueis Gray also had the best season of his career, setting career highs with seven starts, 14 receptions and 174 receiving yards.
