The San Francisco 49ers practice squad is now at capacity. Get to know the 10 players, most of whom are familiar faces.

LB Ben Boulware

Boulware (6-1, 235) was originally signed by the Carolina Panthers on May 1, 2017 as an undrafted free agent and was later released on September 2. A 23-year-old native of Anderson, SC, Boulware attended Clemson University where he appeared in 53 games (31 starts) and registered 352 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, five interceptions, 10 passes defensed, six forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. As a senior in 2016, he made 14 starts and finished with a team-high 131 tackles in addition to 11.5 tackles for loss, four sacks and one interception. Boulware earned the Jack Lambert Award, which is given to the nation’s top linebacker, and was named a Third-Team All-American by the Associated Press.

WR DeAndre Carter

Carter (5-8, 190) originally signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent on May 8, 2015. He was waived on August 31, 2015 and later signed to the Oakland Raiders practice squad on September 16, 2015. Following his release from the Raiders on December 1, 2015, Carter was signed to the New England Patriots practice squad on December 15, 2015. After spending training camp with New England in 2016, he was waived on September 3, 2016. A 23-year-old native of San Jose, CA, Carter attended California State University, Sacramento, where he appeared in 41 games throughout his four-year career (2011-14) and finished with 207 receptions for 2,760 yards and 35 touchdowns. As a senior in 2014, he set a single-season school record with 99 receptions for 1,321 yards and 17 touchdowns while earning Associated Press FCS First-Team All-American honors.

OL John Flynn

Flynn (6-5, 320) spent five years at Montana State and finished his career by starting 43 consecutive games. Earned First-Team All-Big Sky honors in 2016 after starting all 11 games as a senior. In 2015, started all 11 games at left guard. In 2014, started all 13 games at left guard and earned First-Team All-Big Sky honors. Was named Third-Team All-Big Sky in 2013 after starting the final eight games of the season. Redshirted as a true freshman in 2012. Attended Bettendorf (IA) HS, where he earned first-team all-state honors as a senior after helping lead Bettendorf to an undefeated regular season and state runner-up finish. Born 8/30/93 in Knoxville, TN.

TE Cole Hikutini

Hikutini (6-4, 247) appeared in 24 games (13 starts) and registered 69 recepts. for 1,016 yds. and 11 TDs during his two-year career at Louisville. In 2016, appeared in 13 games (10 starts) and ranked fifth among tight ends in FBS with 49 recepts. for 656 yds. and 8 TDs. As a junior, appeared in 11 games (3 starts) and totaled 19 recepts. for 348 yds. and 3 TDs. Transferred to Louisville after spending the 2014 season at the City College of San Francisco, where he registered 40 recepts. for 658 yds. and 4 TDs. Transferred to CCFC after spending two years at Sacramento State. In 2013, appeared in 9 games (4 starts) and recorded 21 recepts. for 204 yds. and 5 TDs. Redshirted in 2012. Attended Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove, CA) HS, where he hauled in 27 recepts. for 536 yds. and 6 TDs as a senior. Born 6/11/94 in Wilton, CA.

CB Asa Jackson

Jackson (5-10, 183) was originally drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round (169th overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft. Throughout his five-year NFL career with the Ravens (2012-15) and Detroit Lions (2016), he has appeared in 22 games (eight starts) and registered 34 tackles and four passes defensed. A 27-year-old native of Sacramento, CA, Jackson attended Cal Poly where he appeared in 43 games (42 starts) and totaled 199 tackles, 40 passes defensed, eight interceptions, three forced fumbles and one sack.

RB Jeremy McNichols

McNichols (5-9, 214) was originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fifth round (162nd overall) of this year’s NFL Draft out of Boise State University. In three seasons (2014-16), he appeared in 34 games (25 starts) and registered 571 rushes for 3,205 yards (5.6 average) and 44 touchdowns as well as 103 receptions for 1,089 yards and 11 touchdowns. On special teams, he returned 28 kickoffs for 554 yards (19.8 average). As a junior in 2016, he earned Second-Team All-Mountain West honors for the second-consecutive season after rushing for 1,709 yards and 23 touchdowns on 314 carries. He was waived by the Buccaneers on September 2, 2017.

QB Nick Mullens

Mullens (6-1, 187) played in 44 games (41 starts) and completed 928 of 1,546 atts. for 11,994 yds. and 87 TDs during his four seasons at Southern Mississippi. In 2016, made 11 starts and completed 243 of 384 atts., for 3,272 yds. and 24 TDs, averaging 297.5 passing yds. per game. Started all 14 games as a junior in 2015, setting single-season school records for passing yds. (4,476) and TD passes (38) as the Golden Eagles finished with more than 7,000 yds. of offense for the first time in school history. In 2014, started 10 games and completed 218 of 365 atts. for 2,470 passing yds. and 12 TDs. As a freshman in 2013, appeared in 9 games (6 starts) and threw for 1,776 yds. and 13 TDs while earning Conference USA All-Freshman honors. Attended Spain Park (Birmingham, AL) HS, where he had 8,605 career passing yds., finishing his high school career with the 7th-most passing yds. in AHSAA history, to go along with 40 passing TDs. Born 3/21/95 in Hoover, AL.

DL Noble Nwachukwu

Nwachukwu (6-2, 275) appeared in 47 games (38 starts) during his five years (2012-16) at West Virginia, finishing his career with 126 tackles, 29.5 TFLs, 15.5 sacks, 7 PDs, 3 FFs and 1 FR. As a senior in 2016, led the team with 4.0 sacks and finished with 40 tackles, 7.5 TFLs, 2 PDs, 1 FF and 1 FR. In 2015, started all 13 games for the second-consecutive season and tallied 47 tackles, 13 TFLs and a team-high 8.5 sacks, 1 PD and 1 FF 2.0 sacks, 3.0 TFLs, 1 INT and 1 FR. As a sophomore, started 13 games and notched 34 tackles, 8.0 TFLs, 4 PDs and 2.0 sacks. Appeared in 9 games in 2013, finishing with 5 tackles, 1.0 TFL, 1.0 sack and 1 FF. Redshirted in 2012. Attended Wylie (TX) HS, where he was a two-time unanimous first-team all-district 10-4A defense member. As a senior in 2011, registered 53 tackles, 8 TFLs and 1 FF. Born 11/30/94 in Wylie, TX.

WR DeAndre Smelter

Smelter (6-2, 227) was originally drafted by the 49ers in the fourth round (132nd overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft. After spending his entire rookie season on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury List, he was waived from the team on Sept. 3, 2016. A 24-year-old native of Macon, Ga., Smelter attended Georgia Tech where he appeared in 25 games (20 starts) and registered 56 receptions for 1,060 yards (18.9 avg.) and 11 touchdowns. As a senior, he earned Second-Team All-ACC honors where he started all 12 games in which he appeared and notched 35 receptions for 715 yards (20.4 avg.) and seven touchdowns.

OL Darrell Williams Jr.

Williams Jr. (6-6, 310) appeared in 46 games during his five years (2012-16) at Western Kentucky. Started in 38 consecutive games over his final three seasons along the offensive line for the Hilltoppers. As a senior in 2016, was part of an offensive line that paved the way for a seventh-consecutive 1,000-yd. rusher. In 2015, started all 14 games at right tackle, anchoring the right side of an offensive line that finished the year ranked 19th nationally in sacks allowed, with just 16 sacks on 554 pass atts., the 7th-best percentage nationally and second among teams with 500-or-more atts. During the 2014 season, he started 10 straight games at right guard, helping pave the way for 2,018 all-purpose yds. from RB Leon Allen. Saw action in 7 games in 2013, starting the final three at right tackle. Redshirted in 2012. Attended West Laurens (Dexter, GA) HS, where he finished his career starting 31-consecutive games at offensive tackle. He lettered all four years in football and basketball. Born 3/24/93 in Dublin, GA.
