Biography

Goldmine

  • Growing up in Northridge, CA, sports were always a part of Paulsen’s life. With soccer dominating most of his childhood, it wasn’t until middle school that he took up flag football. Once he got to high school, Paulsen had to choose only one to play because he didn’t have time to play both club soccer and high school football. Paulsen didn’t expect football to become such a large part of his life until his junior year of high school, when he started receiving scholarship offers. However, choosing a college was as much about academics as it was about football. Paulsen’s father graduated from MIT and his uncle graduated from Harvard. Paulsen narrowed his choices down to UCLA, Stanford and Duke before ultimately deciding to become a Bruin. “I always wanted to go to UCLA growing up,” Paulsen said in 2012. “Really it was a no decision.”
  • After his senior season at UCLA in 2010, Paulsen set his sights on the NFL. Without an invite to the Senior Bowl or NFL Combine, he focused all his energy on putting on a good showing at his Pro Day. One person he reached out to for advice during that time was current 49ers assistant head coach/tight ends coach Jon Embree, who coached Paulsen during his freshman year at UCLA. Embree, the tight ends coach for the Washington Redskins at the time, encouraged Paulsen to sign in Washington. “Ultimately, I decided to go with what I knew and go with the guy who I knew would give me an opportunity and a guy that I had a lot of faith in.”

  • Paulsen was an active member of the community during his six years in the Washington Redskins organization. In 2015, he hosted a flag football kickoff event for Special Olympics Virginia. In 2013, Paulsen participated in the Salute to Play 60 Military Challenge event at Joint Base Andrews and has helped distribute coats, gloves and hats to underserved kids from the Washington, D.C. area.
  • In 2012, Paulsen began growing out his beard and vowed not to shave his beard until Nick Ekbatani, a close friend and former UCLA teammate of Paulsen who tragically lost one of his legs as the result of a horrific motorcycle accident earlier that summer, could walk again. In June of 2013, Ekbatani posted a YouTube video of himself walking. Now, Paulsen’s typical football season ritual usually involves growing a beard.
