Biography

Goldmine

  • Smelter joined TE Blake Bell as one of two players on the current roster to be drafted in both the National Football League and Major League Baseball. Smelter was selected in the 14th round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins, but elected to play collegiately before pursuing his professional career.
  • Smelter originally attended Georgia Tech on a baseball scholarship before joining the football team during the summer of 2013. Smelter played baseball at Georgia Tech from 2011-13, where he pitched and played in the outfield. In 2010, he started 15 games in the outfield and one game on the mound for the Yellow Jackets. He allowed just one earned run in 17.1 innings of work on the mound for a team-best 0.52 ERA among regular relievers and also pitched scoreless ball in 13 relief outings.
  • Despite spending time as both a football and baseball player at Tech, Smelter saw quick success on the gridiron as each of his first two receptions went for touchdowns at Georgia Tech.
