Goldmine

  • Along with fellow 49ers TE Garrett Celek and DT Tank Carradine, McDonald visited Haiti in conjunction with Convoy of Hope, working together to teach healthy eating habits and sustainable agriculture techniques to local families. The players also visited an orphanage and local schools to spend time with underprivileged youth. “What I’ve seen here is just the impact everyone can have. We truly can come together and make a difference for people. It really opened our eyes to all the amenities that we take for granted – having ice, running water, food, air conditioning and the list goes on.”

We truly can come together and make a difference for people. It really opened our eyes to all the amenities that we take for granted – having ice, running water, food, air conditioning and the list goes on.”
  • No more than three months after returning from his trip to Haiti, McDonald was eager to continue his giving ways. In partnership with his local church, he and his wife headed to Nicaragua to help build a church and develop a trade school for young men to learn different skills such as carpentry and welding. His visit in Haiti involved much more manual labor than his time in Haiti. “We were also installing a water system, and so we were digging up water lines for their kitchen. That took a couple days. Prior to the trip, I held an autograph session at the church to help raise money for all this. We raised a ton of money and had enough funds to redo the entire inside of the school. We got water and electricity running so the kids could study at nighttime. We basically installed an entire ceiling and panels for the walls for insulation to make it more comfortable.”
  • Growing up, McDonald spent a lot of his time at the Drake Plantation in Winnie, a large open land full of wildlife such as ducks, geese and deer, which his uncle owned. He went fishing, caught crawfish and rode four-wheelers. “I loved just being an outdoorsman,” he said. “It’s a big agricultural town.”
  • McDonald grew up in Winnie, Texas, which was discovered to have a large oil field and currently has about 3,500 residents. “We have three stop lights and any fast food restaurant you can possibly imagine and a bunch of hotels,” McDonald said to describe Winnie. “It’s a place for truckers to stop off and get some rest and a bite to eat driving off to Louisiana. The whole town is just one highway. Everyone knows everyone’s business.”
