The so-called sophomore slump is a real thing. 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has seen it.
"It happens occasionally because guys had a good first season and they think the game is easy," Fangio said. "They don’t work as hard in the offseason. Think they got it made. In this game you’ll get humbled very quickly both as a player and a coach. It’s just complacency setting in.”
There’s no doubt that after
“Well, obviously anytime an offense is having success with a certain scheme or a particular player and you know you have to play them in the coming season, you’re going to study it and try and figure out a way to somehow neutralize it within your own scheme,” Fangio said. “So, yes that does go on.”

Jim Harbaugh knows about his quarterback’s effort first-hand. When San Francisco’s coach was asked about the 49ers way of doing this on Monday, he rattled off the names of veterans
The physique pictured on those offseason magazine covers comes from somewhere.
While not all are privy to the work Kaepernick does in the film room, he has also been seen pushing and pulling the sled after practices and he – rookie quarterback
Work ethic aside, Harbaugh was asked this week about the challenges a second-year starter like Kaepernick faces. He implied there are many.

"Many people can debate what’s the hardest position in sports. You never like to compare things, but I think everything that the quarterback has to do as I stand back there and watch 10 yards behind the quarterback, 15 yards behind the quarterback, every day (in practice), that’s probably the most challenging position in all of sports, in my opinion.”
