Peyton Manning Calls 49ers Matchup 'Good Test'

Posted Aug 13, 2014

The Denver Broncos quarterback discussed his upcoming matchup against the San Francisco 49ers and spoke highly of the NFC West club.

The San Francisco 49ers continue preseason play this Sunday against the Denver Broncos.

Niners Daily has a few thoughts on the matchup.

And a few topics of discussion for your Wednesday morning.

Prep for Week 2 of Preseason

The 49ers will open up preseason play at Levi’s® Stadium this Sunday at 1 p.m. PT against the Broncos and its five-time NFL Most Valuable Player. The teams opened the 2013 preseason calendar last year at Candlestick Park. Denver was victorious by a 10-6 count.

This time around, Manning enters year 17 of his career looking to get back to another Super Bowl. Denver was defeated last year by the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII. Manning, however, has moved on from the game and is making the most of his regular season tuneups.

The star quarterback saw a lot of action in his preseason opener against the very same Seahawks. Manning completed 10-of-13 passes for 78 yards. Manning, the league's 2013 MVP, played the first two series of the opener and led the Broncos on a scoring drive on their second possession.

In comparison, Colin Kaepernick, played in one series in San Francisco's preseason opener. The 49ers quarterback completed his only pass attempt, a 17-yard crossing route to tight end Vance McDonald. San Francisco ended up settling for a short field goal, the only points scored by the road team in a 23-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

So how much will both star quarterbacks play when the Kaepernick-led 49ers host the Manning-led Broncos?

We don't know how much Kaepernick will play, but Manning shared insight on his playing time expectations when speaking with Denver media on Tuesday.

"I imagine we’ll play more," Manning said. "I’m not sure what the repetitions will be. We’re still working against Denver, working against the Broncos probably up until Friday."

Even so, Manning said he's looking forward to facing San Francisco's first-team defense for however long he's in the game.

"It’s not like a huge preparation when you’re playing against these guys, but it’s a good test when you play the 49ers," Manning said. "It’s a physical game. It’s a team that we’ll play again in the regular season, a 3-4 defense, and so (there are) lots of things we can get out of this."

Both teams will also meet Week 7 of the regular season on "Sunday Night Football" in Denver.

It's worth nothing that Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller told 49ers.com earlier that he's eager to face San Francisco and his friends on the roster. Miller also said the NFC West was the toughest division in the NFL.

“It’s definitely a game that I’ve been looking forwcard to,” Miller said. "I’m looking forward to playing all those guys. I’m looking forward to playing the whole NFC West with Seattle, the Rams and the Cardinals and just going out and competing with those guys.”
