Joe Montana Documents Last Game at The ‘Stick, Levi’s® Stadium Ribbon Cutting

Posted Jul 14, 2014

Niners Daily looks at the final game at Candlestick Park, the first game at Levi's Stadium, and Rihanna #KaepernickingWorldwide.

Ahh a new week, a new Niners Daily (I refuse to accept the week starts on Sunday). The 49ers will celebrate Levi’s® Stadium’s Ribbon Cutting on Thursday, so 49ers.com gets you ready with coverage of the team’s homes, past and present.

1. Farewell, Old Friend

A new moment has been added to the timeline of Candlestick Park. The final football game ever was played Saturday by a team of 49ers legends led by quarterback Joe Montana.  An estimated 30,000 fans showed up on a chilly Saturday night at The ‘Stick to watch the flag football game between 49er greats and retired all stars from around the NFL. The game ended with the 49ers defeating the All-Stars 45-40 on a winning touchdown pass from Montana to Eddie DeBartolo Jr. The former owner of the 49ers gripped the winning TD pass tightly wearing a pair of Jerry Rice’s receiving gloves. A fitting end to 49ers football in the historic building, a place Montana called “a great old stadium.”

>>Montana didn’t have social media during his playing days, but lucky for us the four-time super bowl champion has embraced the current age. He took to Twitter to document the final game.

>>Speaking of finales at Candlestick, remember this? (We will continue to take advantage of any excuse possible to show this clip.)

>>The ‘Stick isn’t dead yet, the game was part of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department's "Last Summer at the 'Stick" series of events.

2. From the Old to the New

As one-chapter ends, another begins. To make an end is to make a beginning. The first step toward going somewhere is deciding not to sta— all right, you get the point. Sentimental ‘new beginning’ quotes aside, it is fitting that days after the final football game was celebrated at Candlestick, the 49ers new home will be opening it’s doors. On Thursday, the Levi’s® Stadium ribbon-cutting event will take place only 819 days from its groundbreaking.

Say you were there for the first game ever at Levi’s® Stadium.  The San Jose Earthquakes play the Seattle Sounders on August the 2nd, and tickets are still available.

3. #KaepernickingWorldwide Went Worldwide

LeBron James news was drowned out on Twitter this past weekend. Not by the World Cup final, but by the #KaepernickingWorldwide phenomenon. OK, we may be making a slightly bigger deal out of this than warranted, but it is pretty cool that this thing took off in the heart of the offseason. Even Rihanna got involved.
