Aldon Smith on Being a Father, Harbaugh the QB Guru, New 49ers Tradition

Posted May 19, 2014

Aldon Smith spoke about being a father, 49ers have five QBs on the roster, feather pen contract signings and more.

Each weekday morning, 49ers.com reviews the most newsworthy and engaging content from around the web involving the San Francisco 49ers and the NFL. We seek it out, so you don't have to. Enjoy.

1. Candid Comments from No. 99

Aldon Smith hasn’t spoken much publicly this offseason, but recent tweets reveal a positive mind state for the San Francisco 49ers linebacker who general manager Trent Baalke says the 49ers will “continue to find ways to support, not defend.” Baalke backed up his words by extending Smith’s fifth-year contract option earlier this month.

In a visit to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area’s TV studio on Friday, Smith expressed his appreciation for the support the team has shown. If San Francisco’s brass didn’t believe in him as a person, the star pass-rusher said, “I don’t think they’d take those chances.” Smith went on to say how being a father continues to change his perspective. “Anybody who has a kid, it’ll change your life,” Smith said. “Somebody who looks up to you and you see the affect you have on his life and how important you are to him. It makes you make decisions and you think twice about things.”

2. Quarterback Guru

The 49ers currently have five quarterbacks on the roster. This shouldn’t surprise anyone who has followed Jim Harbaugh’s reign as head coach. Take a look at all the quarterbacks who have been under contract during Harbaugh’s tenure.

- Harbaugh finds quarterback talent in unlikely places.

3. Quill Pen Love

A new tradition is taking shape at 49ers headquarters. In 2013, safety Craig Dahl decided to forgo a standard ballpoint pen when signing his contract, opting for a classic approach: Quill. Other 49ers players have since followed suit, and the media is finally starting to take notice.

- Craig Dahl the trendsetter shared his inspiration. (We will be sure to include #featherpen on all quill-pen-signing tweets going forward…)
