Niners Hoop it Up

Posted Aug 19, 2013

The 49ers have continued to build strong bonds this offseason on and off the field.

The 49ers have continued to build strong bonds on and off the field.

Helping matters is the mini basketball hoop inserted in the locker room this offseason. The tiny hoop, taped to a pillar on the far side of the locker room, has been bringing players together for post-practice shootarounds.

The hoop even made a cameo at the end of 49ers.com’s “Asomugha Spelling Bee” video in late May.

“I think that was one of the things that brought the team together,” wide receiver Ricardo Lockette said. “When you have something that guys enjoy doing that’s not football oriented, it brings teammates together.”

From the start of the team’s offseason program in May to the dog days of training camp in August, a good number of players have been known to get up a couple of shots during their lunch break.

“You have receivers shooting with the DBs – linemen playing with the D-linemen – it’s kind of fun,” Lockette said.

Perhaps the best part of it is how the hoop has opened up communication throughout the roster.

“That’s when all the stories come out,” Lockette said. “High school stories – I did this in high school and I did that in college – that kind of stuff. You get to learn about people and you get to see who is an athlete outside of practice.”

So who has the best jump shot on the 49ers mini hoop?

“It’s probably Tony Jerod-Eddie or Chad Hall.”
